Men’s Golf Wins Mountain Valley Classic

CRESSON, Pa. – The Penn State Altoona men's golf team posted its second win of the fall on Saturday, when the Lions clinched a first-place finish in this weekend's Mountain Valley Collegiate Classic.

After Friday's opening round of the tournament, which was held at Sinking Valley Country Club, Penn State Altoona held down the top spot out of 13 teams by a 12-shot margin. The Lions followed that up by shooting 316 in Saturday's round, when play shifted to Summit Country Club, to finish the two-day tournament with a team score of 615 that kept Penn State Altoona in first.

Penn College was the runner-up with a two-day score of 624, Mount Aloysius College took third with 630, and Saint Vincent College placed fourth with 634.

"I'm happy to take home any win, but we didn't give it our best today. We took things for granted with a 12-shot lead entering the day, and it caught up to us," said Penn State Altoona head coach Tom Koehle. "But, a win is a win, and it hopefully gives us motivation to bounce back."

Trey Heffelfinger (Mount Union, PA/Mount Union) shot 79 in Saturday's round on the par 72 course, finishing the two-day tournament with a combined score of 151 to come in third place individually out of 70 golfers. Joey Toth (South Park, PA/South Park) recorded a two-day score of 154 after shooting 82 on Saturday, and he took seventh place on the individual leaderboard.

Peter Nusbaum (Pittsboro, NC/Thales Academy) had the best score of the day by any Penn State Altoona golfer, shaving three strokes off of his Friday score to shoot 76 on Saturday. He finished with a two-day score of 155 to tie for eighth place individually.

"Peter played solidly today and moved a couple spots up the leaderboard," said Koehle. "He gave us an opportunity to get the team win today."

Jack DiTrani (Hinsdale, IL/Benet Academy) shot 81 on Saturday to compile a total score of 157 and tie for 12th place overall. Owen Wise (Lewistown, PA/Mifflin County) duplicated his first-round score by shooting 80, finishing with a two-day score of 160 to tie for 18th place.

Penn State Altoona's "B" team shot 339 in Saturday's round, finishing the tournament with a two-day team score of 657 to place seventh.

Jacob Carlin (Fayetteville, PA/Chambersburg) shot 87 on Saturday to finish with a two-day score of 161, tying for 22nd place individually. Logan Divald (North Huntingdon, PA/Norwin) improved on his Friday score by three shots, carding 80 on Saturday to record a total score of 163 and tie for 26th place.

Michael Gloth (Glenwood, MD/Glenelg) shot 84 on Saturday, and his two-day score of 164 tied him for 29th place overall. Nathan Graham (North Huntingdon, PA/Norwin) scored 88 in the second round, totaling 169 over both days to place 35th individually.

The Penn State Altoona men's golf team's next event is Tuesday, September 20 at 1:00 p.m., when the Lions will take part in the second annual Hite Cup. The event will again pit the Lions against non-conference opponent Westminster College in a round of match play, with this year's edition of the duel being held at Olde Stonewood Golf Club in Ellwood City.
