Men’s Golf Ties for Eighth in Allegheny Invitational

MEADVILLE, Pa. – After the second and final day of the Guy and Jeanne Kuhn Memorial Invitational, hosted by Allegheny College at the Country Club of Meadville, the Penn State Altoona men's golf team found itself in a tie for eighth place out of 16 teams.

The Lions shaved seven shots off of their first-round score to shoot 309 as a team during Monday's round, which again featured difficult weather conditions. Penn State Altoona compiled a two-day score of 625 to tie for eighth place on the team leaderboard with fellow Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference team Mount Aloysius College.

Division II Gannon University won the invitational with a combined score of 573, Carnegie Mellon University took the runner-up spot with 601, and host Allegheny placed third with 603.

In addition to tying Mount Aloysius, Penn State Altoona finished ahead of two other AMCC foes who competed in the invitational, as Penn State Behrend took 14th place with a team score of 673 and Pitt-Greensburg was 16th with 718.

"In what were brutal conditions, our goal was to improve on yesterday, no matter how bad the weather turned," said Penn State Altoona head coach Tom Koehle. "I'm proud of these five for sucking it up and taking pride in their work."

Joey Toth (South Park, PA/South Park) had the Lions' top score on the day, shooting a 1-over par 73 for a nine-shot improvement from his Sunday score. Toth totaled 155 over both rounds to tie for 23rd place out of 83 individuals who competed in the event.

Peter Nusbaum (Pittsboro, NC/Thales Academy) held Penn State Altoona's highest individual place, tying for 16th after shooting 79 during Monday's round to finish with a two-day score of 154.

"Peter continues to be steady in our lineup," said Koehle. "Joey really regained his confidence today and was able to post one of the top rounds of the day."

Owen Wise (Lewistown, PA/Mifflin County) tied for 38th place with a two-day score of 158, including his 81 from Monday's round. Jack DiTrani (Hinsdale, IL/Benet Academy) posted a four-stroke improvement from his first-round score, shooting 77 on Monday to finish with a total of 159 that put him in a tie for 40th place. Jacob Carlin (Fayetteville, PA/Chambersburg) was three shots better than his first-round score during Monday's action, carding 80 to compile a two-day score of 163 that gave him 52nd place.

Penn State Altoona men's golf will now prepare for its final event of the fall regular season, as the Lions will host the NCAA Region V Preview at The Virtues Golf Club in Nashport, Ohio on Monday, October 3 and Tuesday, October 4.
