Men’s Golf Wraps Up Regular Season at Region V Preview

NASHPORT, Ohio – The Penn State Altoona men's golf team played its final round of the fall regular season on Tuesday, capping the two-day NCAA Division III Region V Preview tournament at The Virtues Golf Club by tying for fifth place out of 15 teams.

Following their team score of 340 from Monday's round, Penn State Altoona shot 316 on Tuesday to finish with a combined score of 656, climbing the leaderboard to finish in a tie for fifth place. The Lions ended the tournament ahead of fellow Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference teams Penn State Behrend (11th place, 680), Mount Aloysius College (13th place, 691), and Pitt-Bradford (15th place, 703).

Otterbein University won the tournament with a two-day team score of 627, and the College of Wooster was the runner-up with 637. Trine University moved up to finish third with 639.

Jack DiTrani (Hinsdale, IL/Benet Academy) bettered his score by eight shots from Monday, firing a 5-over par 77 on Tuesday to finish with a two-day score of 162 to tie for 21st place individually out of 95 total golfers. Peter Nusbaum (Pittsboro, NC/Thales Academy) also tied for 21st overall, carding 78 for a six-shot improvement from day one and totaling 162 through two rounds.

Trey Heffelfinger (Mount Union, PA/Mount Union) shot 79 on Tuesday for a five-shot improvement from round one, and he finished with a total of 163 to tie for 27th place. Joey Toth (South Park, PA/South Park) whittled a stroke off of his Monday score, shooting 86 on Tuesday to record a total of 173 to take a tie for 55th place. Owen Wise (Lewistown, PA/Mifflin County) improved by 10 shots from his first-round total, shooting 82 on Tuesday and compiling a two-day score of 174 to tie for 57th.

Among Penn State Altoona's five golfers competing as individuals, Syrak Nemer (Coronado, CA/Coronado) had the lowest score of the day on Tuesday, shooting 84 for a two-shot improvement over his first-round score to finish with a two-day score of 170. Nathan Graham (North Huntingdon, PA/Norwin) had the best improvement of the Lions' individuals from his day one score, improving on his first-round total by six strokes to card an 88 and finish with a combined score of 182.

Jacob Carlin (Fayetteville, PA/Chambersburg) duplicated his first-round score on Tuesday, shooting 89 to finish with a two-day score of 178. Michael Gloth (Glenwood, MD/Glenelg) shaved two strokes off of his Monday score, shooting 93 on Tuesday and totaling 188 in two rounds. Logan Divald (North Huntingdon, PA/Norwin) shot 96 to compile a two-day score of 182.

Now, Penn State Altoona men's golf will prepare for the AMCC Championships, which are set to occur on Monday, October 10 and Tuesday, October 11 at The Club at Nevillewood in Presto, Pa. Should the Lions successfully defend their conference title from last season, the team would obtain the AMCC's automatic bid to compete in the NCAA Division III Championships in May.
