Golf Wins PSU DIII Challenge

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. – The Penn State Altoona men's golf team ended its first tournament of the spring season with a win, as the Lions finished in first place out of six teams in this weekend's two-day Penn State Division III Challenge.

Penn State Altoona's first-place finish marks the team's fourth tournament win of the season.

Sunday's action shifted to the Penn State White Course, where the Lions shot 302 as a team to finish with a two-day score of 453 ranking Penn State Altoona atop the pack of Penn State Division III competitors. Penn State Abington finished as the runner-up with a two-day score of 477, and Penn College placed third by compiling a score of 478.

Penn State Berks took fourth place with a combined score of 482, Penn State Harrisburg was fifth with 483, and Penn State Behrend came in sixth with 492.

"I couldn't have planned a better start to our spring season than to play good, solid golf," said Penn State Altoona head coach Tom Koehle. "We limited major mistakes and battled tough conditions."

Trey Heffelfinger (Mount Union, PA/Mount Union) won the two-day tournament's individual title, finishing the weekend in first place out of 35 total golfers. Heffelfinger shot the lowest score of Sunday's round with a 70, finishing with a two-round combined score of 106.

Peter Nusbaum (Pittsboro, NC/Thales Academy) shot 76 on Sunday, compiling a two-day score of 111 to finish as the event's individual runner-up.

"Trey was outstanding and played steady both days. He had a nice birdie run today to separate himself from the field. His hard work has led to this success," said Koehle. "Peter wasn't at his best, but certainly gutted things out to take solo second. I know with his work ethic that he will continue to improve and help the team this spring."
