Penn State Altoona Men's Soccer Gives Fans Sense of Victory on Senior Day

On Friday, April 16, the Penn State Altoona men's soccer team competed at home under the bright lights at Spring Run Stadium in an exhibition match against La Roche University. They celebrated Senior Day by honoring team captain Evan Cardoza, and his parents joined him at the midline in front of students and fans. Cardoza has been a consistent four-year leader on and off of the field.

Senior Cardoza led the Lions in storybook fashion with the first assist of the night, which resulted in a goal scored by Jordan Francis. The game's second goal was assisted by Francis from stellar defense with Michael Holman slotting the perfect final score.

"As a team, we have only been together for a few weeks, and tonight it finally came together. All the players found the heart of our body," said Penn State Altoona head coach Fraser Kershaw. "It was jump started by our senior, Cardoza, who has been faithful with his time between playing and designing through Lockheed Martin."

"In addition, our players have an intense connection with our student section, and when they come together, they suddenly have the world game passion," Kershaw added. "That noise alone keeps us motivated when we are down, as you can see how we countered to get ahead."

"It's been a miracle to be able to play spring exhibitions, considering all the restrictions due to the pandemic," Kershaw stated. "Therefore, we are barely alive with a very short roster for eligible players. Many times, we were without subs, or even down a player due to variables. We molded a few inexperienced eligible students into NCAA soccer players who have never played in club, or even high school. So, with that said, we are doing unbelievable in every way, and I'm very happy for them to find some success against very experienced opposition."

Kershaw said, "We went into the game knowing everything was on the line, and Cardoza stepped up with a beautiful opening assist, and that is the way he will be remembered: the one who steps up as a legendary Penn State Altoona Lion. That, along with a congratulatory nod from World Cup Portugal team captain Nuno Gomes, just might possibly be the very best way to start the next chapter of life with a smile."
