Men’s Swimming Earns 166-83 Win in Opening Meet

ALTOONA, Pa. – The Penn State Altoona men's swimming team got its 2021-22 schedule off to a strong start on Saturday afternoon, when the Lions opened their season with a 166-83 victory over non-conference opponent Washington & Jefferson College in the Adler Natatorium.

Penn State Altoona reeled off an impressive 12 first place finishes as a team.

Isaac Swanson (Clearfield, PA/Clearfield) and Laurence Wang (New Zealand/Auckland Grammar School) each led the way with three individual first place finishes, and Noah Jordan (Clearfield, PA/Clearfield) recorded two individual first places.

Swanson won the 1000 Yard Freestyle with a time of 11:14.43, prevailed in the 100 Yard Backstroke by clocking in at 56.60, and took first in the 500 Yard Freestyle with a time of 5:18.57.

Wang placed first in the 100 Yard Butterfly by finishing in 53.45, and he followed that up by triumphing in the 50 Yard Butterfly with a time of 24.38 and winning the 200 Yard IM with a time of 2.11.53.

Jordan picked up a first place finish in the 50 Yard Breaststroke, clocking in at 29.76. In the 100 Yard Breaststroke, he hit the pad at 1:05.80 to come in first place.

Also recording individual first places were Flavio Tokunaga (South Korea/Seoul Foreign School) and Luke Pletz (Jefferson Hills, PA/Thomas Jefferson). Tokunaga won the 200 Yard Freestyle with a time of 1:55.03, and Pletz secured first place in the 50 Yard Backstroke by finishing in 26.61.

Penn State Altoona also won both of the meet's relay events. In the day's first event, the 200 Yard Medley Relay, the Lions' team of Gabriel Flores (Ashburn, VA/Rock Ridge), Tokunaga, Pletz, and Jordan combined for a time of 1:45.55 to come in first. In the meet's final event, the 200 Yard Freestyle Relay, Swanson, Wang, Jordan, and Yash Ray (King of Prussia, PA/Conestoga) came together to post a time of 1:32.44 to win it.

Penn State Altoona men's swimming gets back into the water next weekend, when the Lions will travel to go up against non-conference opponent Chatham University on Saturday, October 23 at 1:00 p.m.
