Men’s Swimming Remains in Ninth Following Day Two at Oberlin

OBERLIN, Ohio – The Penn State Altoona men's swimming team continued to hold down ninth place out of 12 teams, following the conclusion of the second finals session of the three-day Oberlin College Invitational on Friday night at Carr Pool.

The Lions added 137 points to their total on Friday, increasing their team score to 241 points. Through the first two days of competition, Penn State Altoona ranks ahead of non-conference opponents SUNY Brockport (10th place, 186 points), Wheeling University (11th place, 11 points), and Chatham University (12th place, three points).

Fellow Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference team Alfred State College is in first place with 752.5 points, while host school Oberlin follows closely behind with 738.5 points in second place. AMCC school Penn State Behrend ranks third with 506 points.

The Lions started the night by taking 10th place in the 200 Yard Medley Relay, as Luke Pletz (Jefferson Hills, PA/Thomas Jefferson), Adam Dotts (Hummelstown, PA/Lower Dauphin), Laurence Wang (New Zealand/Auckland Grammar School), and Jack Zisa (Yardley, PA/Pennsbury) recorded a combined time of 1:40.89.

Next, Allan Samoilovich (Leonia, NJ/Paramus Catholic) competed in the 'B' final of the 400 Yard IM, finishing fourth in that group and 12th overall with a time of 4:43.90. Two Lions qualified for the 'C' final of the next event, the 100 Yard Butterfly, as Wang won the group and took 17th overall with a time of 53.92 and Pletz took sixth in the group and 22nd overall by finishing in 55.08.

In the 200 Yard Freestyle, Isaac Swanson (Clearfield, PA/Clearfield) swam in the 'C' final and took second in his group and 18th on the overall leaderboard by recording a time of 1:50.74.

Three Lions made the cut to compete in a finals group of the next event, the 100 Yard Breaststroke. In the 'B' final, Dotts took fifth in the group and 13th overall by finishing in 1:02.73. Brian Nguyen (Lancaster, PA/Manheim Township) and Matteo Sinagoga (Langhorne, PA/Neshaminy) each qualified for the 'C' final, with Nguyen coming in third in the group and 19th overall by posting a time of 1:03.09 and Sinagoga placing eighth in the group and 24th overall by finishing in 1:12.44.

Penn State Altoona wrapped up the night with a sixth place finish in the 800 Yard Freestyle Relay, in which Swanson, Zisa, Wang, and Dotts combined for a time of 7:34.63.

Now, the Lions will prepare for the third and final day of the Oberlin Invitational tomorrow, Saturday, November 19. The schedule for Saturday's action has been changed, with a single finals session replacing the morning preliminaries and evening finals. That finals session will begin at 10:00 a.m.
