Men’s Swimming Stays in Third After Day Three at Conference Championships

WEBSTER, N.Y. – The Penn State Altoona men's swimming team held down third place on the team leaderboard by the conclusion of day three of this week's Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Championships on Friday night at the Webster Aquatic Center.

Alfred State College was in first place by the end of Friday night's finals session with a team score of 823 points. Penn State Behrend held second place with 608 points, and Penn State Altoona was in third with 314.5 points. Pitt-Bradford ranked fourth in the AMCC with 181 points, and Wells College was in fifth with two points. Out of 10 total AMCC and Empire 8 teams competing in the combined meet, Penn State Altoona finished Friday's action in sixth place.

Among Penn State Altoona's highlights on Friday was qualifying to compete in three different 'A' finals, one of which resulted in a new team record.

Two Lion swimmers made the cut to swim the 'A' final of the 200 Yard Freestyle. Adam Marawan (Dubai, UAE/GEMS Dubai American Academy) registered a time of 1:44.98 to take third place in the AMCC and fifth place overall, while Isaac Swanson (Clearfield, PA/Clearfield) finished in 1:46.28 to come in seventh in the AMCC and 10th place overall.

In the 100 Yard Backstroke 'A' final, Luke Pletz (Jefferson Hills, PA/Thomas Jefferson) set a new Penn State Altoona men's swimming team record by recording a time of 52.20 to finish as the AMCC runner-up and take third place in the overall standings. Pletz's time edged past the previous record time of 52.31, set by Swanson on February 21, 2020 during that season's conference championships. Later in the meet, during his part of the 400 Yard Medley Relay, Pletz broke the record that he had just set by recording a time of 51.98 in the 100 Yard Backstroke portion of the event.

Penn State Altoona's team of Pletz, Brian Nguyen (Lancaster, PA/Manheim Township), Ethan Andrews (McVeytown, PA/Mifflin County), and Swanson competed in the 400 Yard Medley Relay 'A' final, combining for a time of 3:38.84 to finish third in the AMCC and sixth place overall.

The fourth and final day of the AMCC Championships is tomorrow, Saturday, February 18. The day's preliminaries will begin at 10 a.m., and the last finals session of the meet is at 5 p.m. A senior swimmer and academic recognition ceremony is scheduled to commence at 4:15 p.m., and final awards will be announced following the completion of the evening's last event.
