Lions Blank Thiel for Fourth Win

GREENVILLE, Pa. – The Penn State Altoona men's tennis team secured its fourth overall win of the season on Sunday afternoon, when the Lions wrapped up their weekend road trip with a 9-0 whitewash of non-conference opponent Thiel College.

Penn State Altoona (4-2) started the match with three wins in doubles, then won all six singles matches over Thiel (0-3) to shut out the Tomcats.

Joey Toth (South Park, PA/South Park)/Casey Hess (Annville, PA/Annville-Cleona) topped the doubles lineup with an 8-3 victory in the No. 1 match, the duo's team-best third doubles win of the season together. In the No. 2 match, Nick Beard (Manns Choice, PA/Bedford)/Emmett Hibbs (Richfield, PA/East Juniata) prevailed 8-0 for their first win together this year. Penn State Altoona picked up a forfeit win in the No. 3 doubles match.

In singles, Toth posted a 6-1, 6-3 win in the No. 1 spot for his third singles win of the season. In No. 2 singles, Hess played to a 6-0, 6-1 triumph for his fourth victory. Beard recorded a 6-1, 6-2 win in the No. 3 singles spot for his fourth win of the season, and Hibbs blanked his opponent 6-0, 6-0 in the No. 4 match for his third win. Ethan Schneider (Broad Top, PA/Tussey Mountain) won 6-1, 6-1 in the No. 5 spot for his fourth victory of the season. The Lions picked up a point in the No. 6 match via a forfeit.

Penn State Altoona men's tennis returns home for its next match, as the Lions will host regional non-conference opponent Juniata College this Wednesday, March 29 at 4:30 p.m.
