Men’s Tennis Sweeps Mounties, Ties Program Wins Record

EBENSBURG, Pa. – The Penn State Altoona men's tennis team closed its regular season schedule with a pair of 7-2 wins over Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference opponent Mount Aloysius College on Saturday at the Ebensburg Tennis Center.

With its two victories, Penn State Altoona (12-4, 6-2 AMCC) has reached 12 overall wins this season, tying the men's tennis program's single-season record for wins. The 2000 edition of the Lions also achieved 12 overall wins, culminating in a perfect record and an AMCC championship win that year.

Additionally, with two singles wins on Saturday, sophomore Casey Hess (Annville, PA/Annville-Cleona) tied the Lions' single-season record for the most singles wins with 12. Hess set that record himself last season, and now has a chance to break it with one more singles win.

The Lions also had a new single-season record set in doubles, as Emmett Hibbs (Richfield, PA/East Juniata) established a new team record for the most doubles wins in a season with 12. Hibbs entered the day tied with former Lion Jared Sutton's record of 10 doubles wins in a season, which Sutton set in the 2011 season.

Match One: Penn State Altoona 7, Mount Aloysius 2

Penn State Altoona started its first match of the day by sweeping doubles, establishing a 3-0 lead over Mount Aloysius (5-7, 4-4 AMCC) heading into singles.

In No. 1 doubles, Joey Toth (South Park, PA/South Park)/Hess pulled out an 8-6 victory for their seventh win together this season. Ethan Schneider (Broad Top, PA/Tussey Mountain)/Nick Beard (Manns Choice, PA/Bedford) prevailed 8-3 in the No. 2 doubles match for their seventh victory, and Hibbs/Parth Raval (Mumbai, India/Thakur Polytechnic) won 8-6 in the No. 3 spot for their third win together.

Next, Penn State Altoona won four of six in singles play to finish the match with a five-point victory over the Mounties. Hess won what was the match-clinching point with his triumph in the No. 2 singles spot, where he defeated his opponent 6-3, 6-0 for his 11th singles win of the year. Beard recorded his ninth victory of the season with a 6-0, 6-2 victory in the No. 3 match, and Hibbs prevailed 6-3, 6-3 in No. 4 for his ninth win. Schneider came back from a first-set loss in the No. 5 spot, winning 3-6, 6-2, 10-7 for his 10th victory of the season.

Match Two: Penn State Altoona 7, Mount Aloysius 2

In the second and final match of the day, Penn State Altoona found itself trailing after doubles play, as Mount Aloysius earned 8-6 wins in the No. 1 and No. 2 matches to establish a 2-1 lead. The duo of Hibbs/Raval provided the lone doubles point for the Lions in the No. 3 match, where they got their fourth win together with an 8-6 victory.

But Penn State Altoona bounced back in a big way, winning all six singles matches to come back and deal Mount Aloysius a five-point loss. Hess played the No. 1 spot, where he won 6-4, 7-5 for his 12th singles win of the year to tie the Lions' single-season record. Toth posted a 6-2, 6-1 victory in No. 2 singles for his sixth win of the season, and Beard nabbed his 10th win of the year with a 6-2, 6-3 victory in the No. 3 slot. Hibbs pulled out a tiebreaker win in the No. 4 match, prevailing 6-3, 2-6, 10-4 for his 10th win of the season. Schneider scored the match-winning point with his victory in No. 5, earning a 6-3, 6-1 triumph for his 11th win of the season. Raval earned his third win of the year with a 6-0, 6-3 victory in the No. 6 match.

With its two wins on Saturday, Penn State Altoona finishes the regular season with a 6-2 record in the AMCC and has clinched the number two seed in the upcoming conference postseason tournament. The Lions will face off against the number three seed in a semifinal round match next Saturday, April 22.
