Men’s Volleyball Sweeps Hilbert 3-0

HAMBURG, N.Y. – Penn State Altoona men's volleyball picked up its second Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference win of the season on Friday evening, defeating Hilbert College 3-0 in the Hafner Recreation Center.

The Lions (2-3, 2-2 AMCC) took care of things in three quick sets, winning 25-6, 25-13, and 25-13.

Penn State Altoona recorded 16 service aces as a team, a total which represents the second-most aces in a match in team history. The Lions also swung at a season-high .410 attack percentage, which is the eighth-best mark in a match in program history.

Frank Perehinec (Altoona, PA/Altoona) had a match-high six service aces in just one set of action, tying for the second-most aces in a match in team history.

Abel Gebre (Palmyra, PA/Palmyra) led Penn State Altoona with seven kills to go along with four assists and two service aces. Jared Bodisch (Red Lion, PA/Red Lion) posted six kills, and he added three service aces and two digs. Connor Ebersole (Altoona, PA/Bishop Guilfoyle) notched five kills, and Trey Sadler (Grantville, PA/Lower Dauphin) had four kills and two aces.

Connor Baker (Red Lion, PA/Red Lion) had a team-best 11 assists, and he also chipped in two kills and two aces. Matthew Faust (New Oxford, PA/New Oxford) added five assists, two kills, two digs, and one ace, and Sadler also tallied five assists.

Micah Brinker (Lock Haven, PA/PA Cyber) finished with a team-high four digs, and Payton Reed (Columbus, OH/Hilliard Darby) had three digs.

Penn State Altoona cruised to a big win in the first set, during which the Lions committed no attack errors and finished with a .556 attack percentage. Things were tight early, as the set score was tied 5-5 through the first 10 points. But Penn State Altoona finished the set on a big 20-1 run to take the early lead.

The Lions pulled away from Hilbert (0-2, 0-2 AMCC) early in the second set. With the score tied 2-2, back-to-back aces from Sadler put Penn State Altoona ahead by two points. Later, three straight Lion kills – two from Faust and one by Ebersole – helped the visiting team to an 11-point lead, 16-5. Two kills from Gebre late in the set helped the Lions earn a 2-0 lead in the match.

Penn State Altoona took care of business in the third set. Holding a 10-8 lead, the Lions outscored the Hawks 15-5 the rest of the way. The visitors posted a solid .423 attack percentage during the set.

Lions volleyball wraps up its AMCC road trip tomorrow, Saturday, March 27, with a match at conference foe Medaille College at 2:00 p.m.
