Men’s Volleyball Earns Season Sweep of Mounties

CRESSON, Pa. – The Penn State Altoona men's volleyball team wrapped up its March schedule with a 3-1 victory over Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference opponent Mount Aloysius College at the ACW Center on Wednesday night.

Penn State Altoona (4-18, 4-7 AMCC) opened the match by winning the first two sets by identical scores of 25-16. Mount Aloysius (4-14, 0-10 AMCC) stayed alive with a 27-25 victory in the third set, but the Lions bounced back for a commanding 25-10 win in the fourth.

The win is Penn State Altoona's fourth AMCC victory of the season, and it clinches the Lions' season sweep of their nearby conference foe, Mount Aloysius.

Connor Ebersole (Altoona, PA/Bishop Guilfoyle) led Penn State Altoona in points and kills, tying his career-high for points with 15 and posting 11 kills while swinging at a team-best .450 clip. He also tied for the match-high in service aces with three and recorded one solo block.

Willem Del Priore (Seven Valleys, PA/Dallastown) and Avery Farabaugh (Ebensburg, PA/Cambria Heights) each added 11.5 points. Del Priore had eight kills, three aces, and a block assist to go along with seven digs, while Farabaugh finished with nine kills and a team-best three total blocks (two solo blocks, one block assist) while tying for the team-high in digs with nine.

Jared Kish (Columbus, OH/Hilliard Darby) recorded 8.5 points on five kills, three aces, and a block assist, and Alex Ferry (Warren, PA/Warren) had 4.5 points on three kills, one ace, and one block assist.

Xavier Vang (Rogers, MN/Rogers) totaled a match-high 32 assists for Penn State Altoona while also registering eight digs and three kills.

Jeremy Winter (Massapequa, NY/Massapequa) tied for the Lions' lead in digs with nine.

As a team, Penn State Altoona finished with 11 service aces, tying for the second-most by the Lions in a four-set match in program history.

Penn State Altoona ran up a big lead in the first set to win it by a comfortable margin. Capitalizing on eight assorted Mount Aloysius miscues early in the set, the Lions were able to start on a 10-2 run. The Lions widened the gap to 20-8, and after the Mounties got back to within eight points, a kill by Farabaugh put the finishing touches on a first-set victory for Penn State Altoona.

Down 2-1 early in the second set, the Lions scored four straight points – including kills from Kish, Farabaugh, and Ebersole – and never relinquished their lead the rest of the way. Penn State Altoona boosted its lead to seven points and held a strong advantage throughout the set, with a Kish ace providing the 25th point for the Lions.

Mount Aloysius came alive for a 27-25 win in the third set to stave off the sweep. Penn State Altoona again started strong, getting out to a six-point lead. Kish's kill and a duo block from Kish and Del Priore helped the Lions to a 14-8 advantage, and back-to-back kills from Del Priore and Ebersole made it 16-10 later. Mount Aloysius began to slowly narrow its deficit, and the Mounties eventually tied the score at 22-22, then took the lead on the next point. The teams traded points, with the Lions getting kills from Kish, Ebersole, and Del Priore to keep the score even at 25-25. But the Mounties scored the next two points on a kill and a block to win the third set.

Penn State Altoona responded in a big way in the fourth, winning it 25-10 while posting a .381 attack percentage as a team during the set. The Lions jumped out to a 12-3 lead, including getting two kills and an ace from Ebersole in that span. Leading 17-10 later in the set, Penn State Altoona scored eight straight points to win by 15. During the Lions' match-ending 8-0 run, the team got kills from Ferry, Vang, and Ebersole, as well as back-to-back solo blocks from Farabaugh.

Now, Penn State Altoona men's volleyball flips the calendar to April for its final two matches of the regular season. The Lions' next match is on the road this Saturday, April 1, when the team will travel to Buffalo to take on AMCC opponent Medaille University at 1 p.m.
