ALTOONA, Pa. – Bob Kasun was announced as the head coach of the Penn State Altoona men's and women's volleyball teams on Friday afternoon.

In his role of volleyball coach, Kasun oversees the recruiting, scheduling, and player development for both the men's and women's volleyball teams.

"I am very happy to have Coach Kasun take over both volleyball teams. Bob's wealth of knowledge through coaching at the club and high school levels, as well as being a volleyball official, will set us up for the continued development and success of the teams," said Penn State Altoona Director of Athletics Brent Baird. "Bob will always take the wellbeing of the student-athletes on his teams as his highest priority. I look forward to our teams being a contender for the conference titles on an annual basis."

Kasun served as the interim men's volleyball coach at Penn State Altoona in 2023, his first year with the program. Along with seeing significant improvement over the season, three players on the team (Jared Kish, Avery Farabaugh, and Connor Ebersole) were voted to the All-Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference team.

"I'm very excited and honored to receive this opportunity at Penn State Altoona," Kasun said. "Along with my fellow coaches on the men's and women's volleyball staffs, we plan to build on Penn State Altoona's proud tradition of volleyball and establish these programs as annual contenders for the AMCC championships."

For Penn State Altoona's women's volleyball team, Kasun will succeed Jamie McGreal, who served as the program's interim head coach this past season. McGreal helped guide the Lions to their third-ever AMCC championship victory and NCAA Division III Tournament berth this fall while receiving the conference's Coach of the Year award.

"I want to thank Jamie McGreal for stepping in this season when we were in need of leadership for the women's volleyball team," said Baird. "Jamie did a terrific job leading the team to a conference title and earning coach of the year honors."

Kasun has experienced success coaching in high school, building the Bishop Guilfoyle Catholic girls' and boys' volleyball programs into state-ranked programs.

While coaching Bishop Guilfoyle girls' volleyball for 15 years, the program won two District 6, Class A championships along with four berths to the PIAA state championships. Twice BG advanced to the PIAA state semifinals and once to the state quarterfinals. BG won the Laurel Highlands Athletic Conference championship twice, and Kasun was named LHAC coach of the year in both of those years.

As the boys' volleyball coach for seven years, BG captured the school's first two District 6 championships in school history.

Kasun and Ken Streilein co-founded the Horseshoe Volleyball Club, which created playing opportunities in local, state, and national competitions for hundreds of volleyball players in central Pennsylvania. He also served as the Western Pa. AAU volleyball director for four years.

Kasun was also an official and line judge for the PIAA for high school matches and the Professional Association of Volleyball Officials for college matches.

Kasun and his wife Joann currently reside in Altoona. They have three grown children: Ben, Rebecca, and Emily.
