Softball Swept in Doubleheader at Wilson
CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. – The Penn State Altoona softball team suffered a doubleheader sweep at the hands of non-conference opponent Wilson College on Thursday afternoon.
Wilson (9-1) edged out a 2-1 victory in game one, before defeating Penn State Altoona (3-4-1) 11-3 in five innings in game two.
Game One: Wilson 2, Penn State Altoona 1
Wilson came out on top of a low-scoring affair in game one.
Casey Reese (Cresson, PA/Penn Cambria) started in the circle and pitched well while being saddled with the loss. Reese went six innings in a complete game effort, allowing just one earned run on seven hits and two walks. She recorded six strikeouts.
Makenzie Lukehart (Utahville, PA/Glendale) went 2-for-3 to lead the Lion bats in hits. Olivia Smith (Martinsburg, PA/Central) went 1-for-4 with a solo home run, and Brooke Bollman (Bedford, PA/Bedford) was 1-for-3 with a double. Kristen Hewitt (Coalport, PA/Glendale), Madison Lucas (Philipsburg, PA/Philipsburg-Osecola), and Jayde Burge (Philipsburg, PA/Philipsburg-Osceola) also had one hit apiece for the Lions.
Katey Roth's RBI single in the first and Meghan Bradley's run-scoring base hit in the third helped Wilson get out to a 2-0 lead.
Penn State Altoona cut its deficit in half with one swing of the bat, when Smith led off the fifth with a home run to left-center that made it 2-1. But the Lions were unable to generate any more scoring opportunities the rest of the way, falling by one in the doubleheader's opening game.
Game Two: Wilson 11, Penn State Altoona 3 (Final/5 innings)
In a two-run game, a big fifth inning broke things open for Wilson, which ended the game early via the eight-run rule.
Miller was 2-for-3 with a triple and an RBI, and Smith went 1-for-3 with a double and two RBI. Hewitt, Reese, Burge, and Shannon Detwiler (Martinsburg, PA/Central) also had hits for the Lions.
Lukehart started in the circle and took the loss for Penn State Altoona after pitching 4 2/3 innings. Miller also made an appearance in the circle, following Lukehart.
After Wilson had worked its way out to a 5-0 lead through three innings, Miller's RBI triple to right in the top of the fourth got Penn State Altoona on the board. Smith's two-run double to left-center later in the inning cut the Phoenix advantage to two, 5-3.
But Wilson put together a six-run bottom of the fifth, invoking the eight-run rule to defeat Penn State Altoona.
Next up, Penn State Altoona will host Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference opponent Penn State Behrend this Saturday, April 10 for a doubleheader at Stewart Athletic Field. Game one is scheduled to start at 1:00 p.m. The games have been tabbed as the AMCC's Games of the Week in softball.
