Softball Loses Two at Pitt-Bradford

BRADFORD, Pa. – Penn State Altoona softball was swept in Saturday afternoon's doubleheader against Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference opponent Pitt-Bradford at the Kessel Athletic Complex.

The Lions (5-8-1, 4-6 AMCC) suffered a 5-1 loss in game one before being handed a 7-2 defeat in game two.

Game One: Pitt-Bradford 5, Penn State Altoona 1

Pitt-Bradford (8-2, 6-2 AMCC) limited Penn State Altoona to just one run on six hits. Kristen Hewitt (Coalport, PA/Glendale), Olivia Smith (Martinsburg, PA/Central), Casey Reese (Cresson, PA/Penn Cambria), Olivia Miller (West Newton, PA/Yough), Brooke Bollman (Bedford, PA/Bedford), and Madison Lucas (Philipsburg, PA/Philipsburg-Osceola) each finished with one hit for the Lions. Bollman scored her team's lone run, and Lucas had a double.

Reese pitched a complete game for the Lions, going six innings and giving up three earned runs.

Trailing 1-0 in the top of the second, Penn State Altoona tied things up, helped by a Pitt-Bradford error. With two outs, Bollman reached base on a single through the left side. After a walk, she scored on an error to even the score at 1-1.

But Pitt-Bradford reclaimed the lead on a Daytona Wentzel two-out RBI double in the bottom of the fourth, then added three more runs in the fifth to extend its advantage to 5-1.

Game Two: Pitt-Bradford 7, Penn State Altoona 2

The Panthers again limited the damage done by the Lion bats, holding Penn State Altoona to two runs on seven hits.

Makenzie Lukehart (Utahville, PA/Glendale) went 3-for-4, and Jayde Burge (Philipsburg, PA/Philipsburg-Osceola) was 1-for-3 with her first collegiate home run.

Lucas went 1-for-3 with a run scored, Miller was 1-for-3 with a double, and Smith also finished 1-for-3.

Reese again started in the circle and took the loss after five innings of work. Lukehart tossed one inning in relief.

After Pitt-Bradford scored a run in the bottom of the first, Penn State Altoona made it 1-1 in the top of the second when Lucas led off with a base hit, moved up to second on Bollman's sacrifice bunt, and scored on an infield throwing error one batter later.

Pitt-Bradford responded with two runs in the third, getting an RBI single from Hannah Lathrop and a steal of home by Faith McLaughlin.

Penn State Altoona used the long ball to cut Pitt-Bradford's lead down to one, when Burge's one-out solo homer to left in the top half of the fifth made it 3-2.

But the Panthers plated three runs in the bottom of the fifth on a home run of their own, as Lexi Peters' three-run shot to left increase the home team's lead to 6-2. In the sixth, Pitt-Bradford added a run to its total when Marguerite DeFranco scored on an outfield error.

Next up, Penn State Altoona softball will travel to face AMCC opponent Pitt-Greensburg in a doubleheader on Tuesday, April 20 at 3:00 p.m. Those games were originally scheduled for Wednesday, April 21, but they were moved up to Tuesday due to weather concerns in Greensburg.
