BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Penn State Altoona softball team came away from Friday's doubleheader at Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference opponent Medaille College with a split, as the Lions won game one but lost game two.

Penn State Altoona (7-10-1, 6-8 AMCC) overpowered Medaille in game one, cruising to a 14-5 victory. But the Mavericks (3-5, 3-5 AMCC) bounced back in game two, prevailing 9-5.

Game One: Penn State Altoona 14, Medaille 5

The Lions scored in every inning, putting 14 runs on the board on 14 hits. Five different Penn State Altoona batters finished with a multi-hit game.

Olivia Miller (West Newton, PA/Yough) led the way with a 4-for-4 performance, tying for the fourth-most hits in a game in Penn State Altoona softball history. She finished the game with a double, a stolen base, a walk, and team-highs with four runs batted in and four runs scored.

Kristen Hewitt (Coalport, PA/Glendale) was 2-for-3 with two RBI, two runs scored, a walk, and a stolen base. Katie College (Davidsville, PA/Conemaugh Township) also produced a 2-for-3 outing at the plate with three runs scored, a double, a walk, and a stolen base.

Jayde Burge (Philipsburg, PA/Philipsburg-Osceola) went 2-for-4 with a double and two runs scored, and Casey Reese (Cresson, PA/Penn Cambria) was 2-for-5 with a double and two RBI. Makenzie Lukehart (Utahville, PA/Glendale) and Madison Lucas (Philipsburg, PA/Philipsburg-Osceola) tallied two RBI apiece.

In the circle, Reese pitched a complete game to record her team-leading seventh victory of the season. In seven innings, she limited Medaille to four earned runs while striking out four batters.

Penn State Altoona drew first blood in the top of the first inning, when Miller's two-run single to center put her team on the board. Later in the inning, Miller scored from third on an infield error to make it 3-0.

The Lions extended their lead to 6-0 in the second. Lukehart's groundout to second base drove in College from third, and an RBI double by Miller and RBI single by Reese gave Penn State Altoona a six-run cushion.

Brooke Bollman's (Bedford, PA/Bedford) RBI groundout in the third scored Lucas to make it 7-0, and Reese's RBI double to left in the fourth put Penn State Altoona ahead by eight runs.

Medaille got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth, when an error allowed Abbigail Doherty to score and a Kylie Lyons RBI groundout tacked another run on to the home team's total.

Lukehart's RBI single to center got one run back for Penn State Altoona in the top half of the fifth, but the Mavericks plated two more runs in the bottom of the inning on RBI base hits from Breanna Zientara and Shay Sommer.

Penn State Altoona responded by increasing its lead to 11-4 in the sixth, as Olivia Smith's (Martinsburg, PA/Central) RBI triple to left and Lucas' run-scoring groundout to third boosted the Lions' lead to seven. In the seventh, Hewitt's base hit drove in a pair of runs, and Miller's RBI single to center put her team up 14-4.

Medaille picked up a run in the bottom of the seventh on Doherty's RBI single to left.

Game Two: Medaille 9, Penn State Altoona 5

Medaille grabbed an early lead in the second game of the doubleheader, getting out in front of Penn State Altoona 5-4 after two innings. The Mavericks totaled four runs in the fifth and sixth innings to pull away and seal the doubleheader split.

College paced the Lion bats, going 3-for-4 with three doubles, one RBI, and one run scored. Her total of three doubles ties the Penn State Altoona softball program's single game record for the most doubles.

Hannah Harlacher (York, PA/West York) went 2-for-3 with a run scored and a walk, and Lucas was 2-for-4 with a run scored. Hewitt, Burge, and Shannon Detwiler (Martinsburg, PA/Central) each finished with one RBI.

Lukehart got the starting nod at pitcher for game two and took the loss, pitching five innings, yielding six runs, and striking out two batters. Reese tossed one inning in relief, allowing no earned runs while striking out a pair.

Medaille got four runs across in the bottom of the first to jump out to an early advantage. Sommer's RBI single to left and Audra Marley's RBI fielder's choice made it 2-0, and Lyons' two-run triple to left gave the Mavericks a 4-0 lead.

Penn State Altoona countered with a four-run inning of its own, tying the score in the top of the second. Detwiler's run-scoring base hit to center put the Lions on the board, and College scored on a passed ball during the next at-bat to cut the Medaille lead to 4-2. One batter later, Detwiler scored on an error, and Hewitt followed with a sacrifice fly to center that evened the score at 4-4.

The Mavericks got back out in front in the bottom half of the second, when Gabrielle Presutti's RBI double to center put the home team ahead 5-4.

Lyons' RBI single in the fifth added a run to Medaille's total, and the Mavericks scored three more runs in the sixth on a Lions error and Doherty's two RBI single.

Penn State Altoona narrowed the gap to 9-5 in the top of the seventh, when Smith led off the frame with a walk and scored on College's double to left. But the Lions were unable to score any more runs, as Medaille closed out the four-run win.

Penn State Altoona softball returns to action on Thursday, April 29, hosting non-conference opponent Carnegie Mellon University for a doubleheader at Stewart Athletic Field. Game one is scheduled to start at 3:00 p.m., and the date will also mark the occasion of the team's Senior Day.
