Softball Splits Monday Games in Myrtle

NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Penn State Altoona softball team continued its week in the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic with another split on Monday at the Central Park Complex.

In game one, the Lions (2-2) suffered a 9-1 loss in six innings to Alvernia University. But Penn State Altoona bounced back in game two, defeating Ursinus College for its second victory of the year.

Game One: Alvernia 9, Penn State Altoona 1 (Final/6 innings)

Alvernia (1-0) put two runs on the board in both the first and second innings to jump out to an early lead, while the Lions were unable to get on track at the plate, as Penn State Altoona was limited to just one run on three hits.

Cameryn Feathers (Martinsburg, PA/Central) went 1-for-2 with a double and a run scored, and Hanna Lauck (Bellefonte, PA/Bellefonte) was 1-for-2 with a run batted in. Karli Storm (Chest Springs, PA/Cambria Heights) also finished 1-for-2.

Alyssa Fisher (Lock Haven, PA/Central Mountain) started in the circle and took the loss for Penn State Altoona after pitching five innings. Madalyn Maynard (Towanda, PA/Towanda) entered in relief and pitched the final 2/3 inning.

In the bottom of the first inning, Alvernia grabbed a 2-0 lead following an RBI double by Jaclyn Barbera and an RBI single from Paige Paciolla. The Golden Wolves doubled their lead in the bottom half of the second, getting an RBI double from Brooke Weister and a run-scoring groundout from Maggie Loomis.

Penn State Altoona plated a run in the top of the fourth to cut its deficit to 4-1. With two outs, Feathers doubled to left-center, and Lauck followed with an RBI single to bring the Lions within three.

But Alvernia picked up three more runs in the fifth, courtesy of a two-run single by Devan Hudson and a sacrifice fly from Alexia Fitzgerald. In the bottom of the sixth, Weister's two-run double to center activated the eight-run rule, and the Golden Wolves completed their victory.

Game Two: Penn State Altoona 7, Ursinus 4

Penn State Altoona rallied from a 3-1 deficit in the fifth inning, scoring six runs in their last two innings to earn a comeback win over Ursinus (4-1).

Fisher went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI, Gianna Hoppel (Lewistown, PA/Mifflin County) was 1-for-3 with a double and three RBI, and Lauck was 1-for-4 with two RBI.

Brooke Colledge (Everett, PA/Everett) finished 1-for-2 with two runs scored and a walk, and Storm batted 1-for-2 with a run scored, a walk, and a stolen base. Feathers was 1-for-1 with a double, two walks, and a run scored, and Maynard was 1-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI.

Madison Peters (Bellefonte, PA/Bald Eagle) started at pitcher and got the win, improving to 2-0 with a complete game performance. In seven innings, she limited Ursinus to two earned runs on six hits and three walks while recording five strikeouts.

Ursinus broke a scoreless tie in the top of the third inning on Kayla Carr's RBI double, but Penn State Altoona knotted the score at 1-1 in the bottom of the fourth. Feathers led off the frame with a double to center before walks from Madison Lucas (Philipsburg, PA/Philipsburg-Osceola) and Peters loaded the bases with one out. Maynard followed with an RBI single to shortstop, evening the score at one run apiece.

Ursinus reclaimed the lead in the top of the fifth, getting two runs across to make it 3-1. Samantha Mallen led off with a walk, stole second, and scored on an error to put the Bears in front, and Carr later hit a sac fly to center to give Ursinus a two-run advantage.

But Penn State Altoona battled back in the bottom half of the inning to tie the score again. Fisher and Colledge started the frame with base hits, and Hoppel's sac bunt moved both runners into scoring position. After a Feathers walk loaded the bases, Lauck delivered a two-run single to left to make it 3-3.

The Lions took their first lead of the day with a four-run sixth inning. With one out, Maynard reached on an outfield error and Storm singled to left to put two baserunners aboard. Fisher's RBI single to left put Penn State Altoona in front, and after Colledge drew a walk, Hoppel cleared the bases with a three-run double to right to make it 7-3.

Ursinus made it 7-4 in the top of the seventh on Carr's RBI double to right-center, but Penn State Altoona avoided further damage to clinch the win.

Penn State Altoona continues its week in South Carolina with a single game tomorrow, Tuesday, March 7, against NJCAA opponent Bay College at field #3 of the Central Park Complex. First pitch is scheduled for 9 a.m.
