Bay College Rallies Past Lions

NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Penn State Altoona softball dipped into exhibition play on Tuesday morning, facing NJCAA school Bay College in the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic at the Central Park Complex.

Penn State Altoona held a 9-7 lead going into the bottom of the sixth, but Bay put together a seven-run inning to overcome its deficit and ultimately deal the Lions a 14-9 loss. The game's result and statistics do not count for Penn State Altoona, as Bay – a two-year community college – is a non-countable opponent by the NCAA.

Cameryn Feathers (Martinsburg, PA/Central) went 2-for-2 for Penn State Altoona with a double, two runs scored, two runs batted in, two walks, and a stolen base. Karli Storm (Chest Springs, PA/Cambria Heights) was 2-for-3 with two doubles, two RBI, and a walk, and Gianna Hoppel (Lewistown, PA/Mifflin County) was 2-for-4 with a home run, two runs scored, and an RBI.

Madalyn Maynard (Towanda, PA/Towanda) tossed five innings in the circle, yielding four earned runs and finishing with a no decision. Madison Peters (Bellefonte, PA/Bald Eagle) pitched one inning and shouldered the loss.

Penn State Altoona scored a pair of runs in the top of the first, as Feathers contributed an RBI single and later scored on an infield error. Bay College jumped ahead with a four-run bottom of the first, but the Lions tied the game following a Storm RBI double in the second and a Hoppel solo home run in the third.

Bay plated a run in the bottom of the third to get back in front, 5-4, but Penn State Altoona tied the score again, using Alyssa Fisher's (Lock Haven, PA/Central Mountain) RBI triple in the top of the fourth to even the score at 5-5.

Bay continued the back-and-forth scoring by getting two runs across in the bottom of the fourth, and the Norse led 7-5 after four complete.

Penn State Altoona worked its way back in front with a three-run top of the fifth. Feathers led off with a walk and later scored on a Madison Lucas (Philipsburg, PA/Philipsburg-Osceola) sacrifice, and a Maynard RBI single knotted the score at 7-7. Storm's RBI double one batter later put the Lions on top, 8-7.

The Lions added to their lead in the sixth, when Feathers' RBI double made it 9-7.

But Bay scored seven runs in the bottom of the sixth to leap ahead 14-9, as the Norse earned a comeback win.

Penn State Altoona softball returns to regular season action tomorrow, Wednesday, March 8, facing Ursinus College and Immaculata University for a pair of games at the North Myrtle Beach Complex in Little River. The Lions start their day against Ursinus at 9 a.m., then take on Immaculata at 1 p.m.
