Softball Sweeps Schuylkill

SCHUYLKILL HAVEN, Pa. – The Penn State Altoona softball team recorded a pair of wins on Tuesday, when the Lions swept USCAA opponent Penn State Schuylkill in a doubleheader at Island Park Complex.

Penn State Altoona (9-9) broke out the bats in game one in a 13-3 victory, then hung on to prevail 8-4 in game two over Penn State Schuylkill (13-11).

Game One: Penn State Altoona 13, Penn State Schuylkill 3

Penn State Altoona totaled 13 runs on 17 hits in game one of the doubleheader to power past Schuylkill. All nine Lion hitters finished the game with at least one hit.

Alyssa Fisher (Lock Haven, PA/Central Mountain) and Karli Storm (Chest Springs, PA/Cambria Heights) both had a three-hit game for Penn State Altoona. Fisher was 3-for-4 with a double, four runs scored, and a walk, while Storm was 3-for-4 with a double, three runs batted in, and a walk.

Meanwhile, Gianna Hoppel (Lewistown, PA/Mifflin County) was 2-for-4 with a double, two RBI, a run scored, and a walk, and Hanna Lauck (Bellefonte, PA/Bellefonte) also went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and a walk. Cameryn Feathers (Martinsburg, PA/Central) finished 2-for-5 with a double, four RBI, and two runs scored, and Madison Peters (Bellefonte, PA/Bald Eagle) was also 2-for-5 with a double, two RBI, and a run scored.

Peters started in the pitching circle and tossed a complete game to pick up her sixth win of the season. In seven innings, the right-hander limited Schuylkill to three runs on seven hits and a walk while striking out seven batters.

Penn State Altoona struck in the top half of the first, when RBI singles from Feathers and Storm drove in the first runs of the game. Madison Lucas (Philipsburg, PA/Philipsburg-Osceola) drew a bases-loaded walk to bring in another run, and Peters' fielder's choice groundout scored another to make it 4-0.

Schuylkill scored a run in the bottom of the first, but Penn State Altoona came back with three runs in the second inning on a two-run double by Hoppel and a two-out RBI single from Peters. Feathers' RBI groundout to shortstop in the third inning helped Penn State Altoona boost its lead to 8-1.

The home team added two runs to its total in the bottom of the fourth, but Penn State Altoona put the game out of reach in the top of the seventh, when the Lions scored five runs to increase their lead to 10. Madalyn Maynard (Towanda, PA/Towanda) drove in a run with an RBI double, and two-run doubles from Feathers and Storm made it 13-3.

Game Two: Penn State Altoona 6, Penn State Schuylkill 0

As was the case in game one, all nine Penn State Altoona hitters finished with at least one hit. Schuylkill made a late push to tie the game, but the Lions were able to hang on for the victory.

Storm was 2-for-4 with a triple, two runs scored, and an RBI. Hoppel also went 2-for-4, finishing with a double, two RBI, and a run scored. Feathers batted 2-for-4, as well, tallying two RBI and a run scored.

Fisher hit 2-for-5 with a double and a run scored, and Peters recorded two RBI.

Fisher started in the pitching circle and earned her third win of the season, going 6 1/3 innings and yielding two earned runs. Peters entered in the bottom of the seventh, getting the final two outs of the game to record her first collegiate save.

After a scoreless three innings to start the contest, Penn State Altoona nabbed the game's first run in the top of the fourth. With one out, Storm tripled, and she scored when Maynard reached on an infield error to make it 1-0.

The Lions got five runs across in the top of the fifth, increasing their advantage to six. During the frame, Penn State Altoona got a pair of two-run singles from Feathers and Peters, as well as an RBI hit by Storm.

Schuylkill trimmed its deficit to three in the bottom of the fifth, when the home team got three runs across to make it 6-3.

But Penn State Altoona responded by scoring two runs in the top of the sixth on a two-run double from Hoppel, getting the Lions' lead to five, 8-3.

Schuylkill scored a run in the bottom of the sixth, then loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh to threaten a comeback. But Penn State Altoona shut the door to preserve its four-run lead and clinch the doubleheader sweep.

Penn State Altoona softball resumes its Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference schedule this Saturday, April 15, when the Lions will travel north to face Pitt-Bradford in a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
