Softball Extends Win Streak in Sweep of Redhawks

PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The Penn State Altoona softball team notched its fifth and sixth consecutive victories on Wednesday, when the Lions swept Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference opponent La Roche University in a doubleheader at the Baierl Athletic Complex.

The Lions (13-9, 5-1 AMCC) pulled out a pair of tight wins over La Roche (10-16, 4-4 AMCC), prevailing by scores of 3-1 and 3-2.

Game One: Penn State Altoona 3, La Roche 1

The Lions got a strong pitching performance while needing only three runs to get past La Roche in the first game of the twinbill.

Madison Peters (Bellefonte, PA/Bald Eagle) tossed a complete game for her eighth win of the season, allowing just one run on three hits and no walks while recording four strikeouts over her seven innings of work.

At the plate, Cameryn Feathers (Martinsburg, PA/Central) finished a home run shy of the cycle, going 3-for-4 with a double and a triple while driving in two runs and stealing a base. Brooke Colledge (Everett, PA/Everett) finished 2-for-4 with a run scored.

Gianna Hoppel (Lewistown, PA/Mifflin County) and Madison Lucas (Philipsburg, PA/Philipsburg-Osceola) both went 1-for-3 with a walk and a run scored, with Lucas also recording a stolen base. Alyssa Fisher (Lock Haven, PA/Central Mountain) also had a hit and an RBI for the Lions.

Penn State Altoona made noise in the top of the first inning to secure an early lead. Fisher led off the frame with a single to shortstop, and Colledge followed with a base hit to left. After Hoppel hit into a fielder's choice, Feathers drove in a pair of runs with her triple to left, giving the Lions a 2-0 advantage.

La Roche made it a one-run game in the bottom of the third, when an RBI single to center from Kennedi Winslow narrowed the Lions' lead to 2-1.

But Penn State Altoona got that run back in the next half inning. Lucas led off with a walk, moved up to second on a groundout, and then stole third base. After Peters walked, Fisher reached on an error by the third baseman, allowing Lucas to score and make it 3-1.

Peters closed out the game with efficient work, retiring La Roche in order in each of her final four innings in the circle to help preserve Penn State Altoona's game-one win.

Game Two: Penn State Altoona 3, La Roche 2

Penn State Altoona broke a 2-2 tie in the top of the seventh, scoring the go-ahead run to avoid extra innings and clinch the doubleheader sweep.

The Lions got more effective pitching in game two. Fisher started in the circle and finished with a no decision, after holding La Roche to two runs while striking out a pair of batters in five innings. Peters entered in relief, pitching two shutout innings with four strikeouts to pick up her ninth win of the season.

Meanwhile, three Lion hitters recorded a two-hit game. Hoppel went 2-for-3 with a double, a run scored, and a walk, Hanna Lauck (Bellefonte, PA/Bellefonte) was 2-for-4 with an RBI and a stolen base, and Feathers was 2-for-4 with a stolen base.

Aubrey Dotts (Houtzdale, PA/Moshannon Valley) was 1-for-2 with a RBI, and Fisher, Lucas, and Karli Storm (Chest Springs, PA/Cambria Heights) also collected hits for the Lions, with Lucas and Storm each scoring a run. Madalyn Maynard (Towanda, PA/Towanda) recorded an RBI.

Penn State Altoona scored two runs in the top of the second to establish an early lead. With one out, Storm singled to left and Lucas doubled to right, putting two runners in scoring position. Maynard's sacrifice fly to left drove in Storm, and Dotts' RBI single to center scored Lucas.

La Roche evened the score at 2-2 in the bottom of the third, getting RBI singles from Winslow and Alexis Myers.

The game remained tied until the top of the seventh, when Penn State Altoona came up big with two outs. With two away, Hoppel and Feathers reached on back-to-back singles. Lauck came next, delivering the go-ahead hit with an RBI single to center that put the Lions back in front, 3-2.

Peters and the Lions retired the side in order in the bottom of the seventh to seal the win.

Penn State Altoona softball returns home for its next games, when the Lions will welcome AMCC opponent Hilbert College to campus for a doubleheader this Friday, April 21 at 2 p.m. Those games were originally scheduled for Saturday, April 22, but they were moved up to Friday to avoid impending inclement weather.
