Softball Win Streak Reaches 10 Games in Sweep of Pioneers

ALTOONA, Pa. – The Penn State Altoona softball team kept its winning streak alive on Thursday afternoon, when the Lions swept Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference foe Alfred State College in a doubleheader at Stewart Athletic Field.

Penn State Altoona (17-9, 9-1 AMCC) made it 10 consecutive victories by defeating Alfred State (9-22, 2-8 AMCC) by scores of 7-0 and 16-8.

Game One: Penn State Altoona 7, Alfred State 0

Penn State Altoona earned its ninth win in a row with a well-rounded performance that saw the Lions couple good pitching and defense with timely hitting.

Madison Peters (Bellefonte, PA/Bald Eagle) pitched a complete game shutout for her 11th win of the season for the Lions. In seven innings of work, she scattered six hits while issuing only one walk, and she struck out three batters.

At the plate, Madison Lucas (Philipsburg, PA/Philipsburg-Osceola) was 2-for-3 with one run batted in, one run scored, and two stolen bases, and Hanna Lauck (Bellefonte, PA/Bellefonte) was also 2-for-3 with two run scored and a walk.

Karli Storm (Chest Springs, PA/Cambria Heights) finished with two RBI for Penn State Altoona, and Brooke Colledge (Everett, PA/Everett), Cameryn Feathers (Martinsburg, PA/Central), and Madalyn Maynard (Towanda, PA/Towanda) recorded one RBI apiece. Gianna Hoppel (Lewistown, PA/Mifflin County) walked twice.

Penn State Altoona opened the scoring in the bottom of the second inning by getting three runs across. After Lauck singled and Storm walked to start the frame, Lucas' RBI single to center and Maynard's sacrifice fly to left drove in both runners. A two-out error by Alfred State later in the inning allowed Lucas to score to make it 3-0.

The Lions upped their lead to 5-0 in the third on Storm's two-run double to left, and a two-out RBI single to center by Feathers in the fourth inning made it 6-0. Penn State Altoona reached a seven-run advantage in the sixth, when a Colledge RBI single up the middle put the score at 7-0.

Game Two: Penn State Altoona 16, Alfred State 8 (Final/5 innings)

Penn State Altoona stretched its win streak to 10 with an eight-run defeat of Alfred State that represented the Lions' third run-rule victory in their last four games. The home team produced its second-best run total of the season in the win and hit a total of six doubles to tie for the sixth-most in a game in Lions history.

Seven different Penn State Altoona hitters finished the game with a multi-hit performance.

Storm was 3-for-4 with three RBI and a run scored, and Colledge was also 3-for-4 with a double, three RBI, and three runs scored. Lucas went 2-for-4 with her third home run of the season – which clinched the run rule-shortened win – to go along with two RBI and two runs scored.

Alyssa Fisher (Lock Haven, PA/Central Mountain) was 2-for-3 with a double, three runs scored, and a walk. Feathers was 2-for-3 with a double, three runs scored, and an RBI, and Lauck hit 2-for-3 with a double, four RBI, and a run scored. Hoppel batted 2-for-4 with a double, two runs scored, and an RBI.

Fisher picked up her sixth win of the season in the pitching circle, tossing all five innings and striking out three batters.

Alfred State scored its first runs of the day in the top of the first inning, as Audrey Farrell's RBI single and Felecia Capito's fielder's choice brought in a pair of runs for the Pioneers.

Penn State Altoona answered with a four-run bottom of the first to grab the lead. Fisher led off the frame with a double, and Colledge and Hoppel followed with two more doubles to even the score at 2-2. After a Feathers single and a wild pitch, Lauck scored Hoppel with a sac fly to left, and Storm drove in Feathers with her base hit up the middle to make it 4-2.

The Lions added to their lead in the second, after loading the bases with no outs. Fisher and Colledge started the inning with singles, and Hoppel reached on a fielder's choice to put three runners aboard with no one out. Feathers contributed a sac fly to plate Fisher, and Lauck's fielder's choice groundout brought home Colledge to increase the home squad's lead to four, 6-2.

Alfred State narrowed its deficit to one in the top of the third. Lauryn Engle's fielder's choice brought one run home, Kailey Wonica picked up an RBI with her groundout to third, and Capito's RBI single to left got the Pioneers back to within one, 6-5.

But Penn State Altoona continued to pour on the offense in the next half inning, scoring five more runs to boost its lead to six. With the bases loaded and one out, Colledge drove in a pair with her base hit to left, and another run scored on an outfield error during the play. One batter later, a two-out throwing error allowed Colledge to score, and Storm's RBI single to left-center field made it 11-5.

Alfred State made it 11-8 in the top of the fourth. Sarah Boyce scored on an outfield error following Nicole Youngberg's single, and RBI base hits by Engle and Capito made it a three-run game.

But Penn State Altoona invoked the eight-run rule with a five-run bottom of the fifth. After Hoppel's single and Feathers' double started the inning, Lauck's double down the left field line advanced both runners home. Storm followed with an RBI double to left center, and Lucas ended the game with her two-run homer inside the left-field foul pole to make it 16-8.

Penn State Altoona softball hits the road for its next games, traveling to Erie this Saturday, April 29 to take on AMCC opponent Penn State Behrend in a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
