Softball Sweeps La Roche in Road Doubleheader

PITTSBURGH – The Penn State Altoona softball team traveled for another Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference doubleheader on Sunday, when the Lions got back in the win column by sweeping La Roche University at the Baierl Athletic Complex.

Penn State Altoona (11-10, 4-2 AMCC) won by the eight-run rule in both contests, defeating La Roche (6-18, 1-5 AMCC) 12-0 in the first game and 14-4 in the second game, with both contests ending after five innings.

Game One: Penn State Altoona 12, La Roche 0

Penn State Altoona posted a well-rounded victory in the first game. The Lions produced 12 runs on 13 hits, played error-free softball, and held La Roche scoreless.

At the plate, four Lion hitters finished with a multi-hit performance. Alyssa Fisher (Lock Haven, PA/Central Mountain) was 4-for-4 with two doubles and three runs scored, and Madalyn Maynard (Towanda, PA/Towanda) went 3-for-4 with three runs batted in. Karli Storm (Chest Springs, PA/Cambria Heights) was 2-for-2 with three RBI and a walk, and Brooke Colledge (Everett, PA/Everett) went 2-for-4 with an RBI, a run scored, and a stolen base.

Josselyn Nau (Bellefonte, PA/Bellefonte) tossed a complete game shutout in the pitching circle to register her seventh win of the season. The right-hander pitched five scoreless innings, allowing only five hits while recording one strikeout.

In the top of the first inning, three straight RBI singles by Hanna Lauck (Bellefonte, PA/Bellefonte), Storm, and Maynard gave Penn State Altoona a 3-0 advantage. Maynard tacked another run on to her team's total in the third with her run-scoring base hit to left.

The Lions doubled their lead with a four-run top of the fourth. Fisher and Colledge led off the inning with singles, and they both later scored on an infield error. Storm's sacrifice fly and another RBI single from Maynard increased Penn State Altoona's lead to 8-0.

The visitors added four more runs to their total in the top of the fifth. Colledge drove in a run with her infield single to shortstop, and a wild pitch later brought Fisher home. Storm drew a bases-loaded walk to bring in another run, and Cameryn Feathers (Martinsburg, PA/Central) scored on a wild pitch to make it 12-0.

Penn State Altoona maintained its lead through the bottom of the fifth, and the game ended early via the eight-run rule.

Game Two: Penn State Altoona 14, La Roche 4

Penn State Altoona kept rolling in the second game of the twinbill. The Lions scored 14 runs on 18 hits and again played errorless defense. This time, six different Penn State Altoona batters had two or more hits.

Feathers went 4-for-4 with a triple, three RBI, three runs scored, and a stolen base, and Lauck was 3-for-4 with two doubles, two RBI, and a run scored. Maynard also had a three-hit game, going 3-for-4 with a double, an RBI, and a run scored.

Gianna Hoppel (Lewistown, PA/Mifflin County) was 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored, Fisher was 2-for-4 with a double and two runs scored, and Madison Sitarek (Sykesville, MD/Century) was 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored.

In the circle, Maynard got the start and picked up her second win in the season in a complete game outing. Over five innings, she limited La Roche to four runs.

Penn State Altoona staked out a 3-0 lead in the top of the first, thanks to RBI singles from Colledge and Feathers and a run-scoring double from Lauck.

La Roche scored its first runs of the day in the bottom of the first, when the Redhawks got four runs across to jump in front.

But Penn State Altoona tied the score in the top of the fourth, when Sitarek's RBI single to left evened the score at 4-4.

The Lions broke the game open with a 10-run top of the fifth. Hoppel scored on an error to start the scoring in the frame, and Storm followed with a sac fly to bring home another run. Maynard's RBI double and Sitarek's RBI single made it 8-4, and Colledge was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to five the Lions a five-run advantage. Hoppel followed with a two-run single, and Feathers came next with a two-run triple. After that, Lauck's RBI double made it 14-4.

Penn State Altoona again kept its lead through the fifth, and the Lions finished with another run-rule win.

Penn State Altoona softball will host AMCC opponent Pitt-Greensburg this Wednesday, April 17, in a doubleheader at home starting at 3 p.m.
