Women’s Bowling Kicks Off Weekend at SFU Invitational

ALTOONA, Pa. – The Penn State Altoona women's bowling team returned to action on Friday for its first competition since November, when the Lions opened the three-day Saint Francis University Red Flash Invitational at Holiday Bowl.

Penn State Altoona finished the day in 13th place out of 13 teams, going 0-5 in head-to-head matches while compiling a total pinfall of 3,078 on the day. Friday's competition consisted of traditional team format matches.

Morgan State University held down the top spot in the standings by the conclusion of day one, going 4-0 with a total pinfall of 4,865. Wilmington University was in second place with a 3-1 record and 4,570 pins dropped, and host school St. Francis was in third with a 4-1 record and 4,502 pins.

Four of Penn State Altoona's five opponents on Friday were Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference foes, with the exception being D'Youville College, a former conference opponent. The Lions started their day with a 924-586 loss to Pitt-Bradford, then fell 765-583 to La Roche University. Penn State Altoona's third match of the day finished with a closer margin, a 687-634 defeat to Mount Aloysius College. Next, the Lions fell 838-595 to D'Youville, then closed out Friday with a 761-680 defeat at the hands of Pitt-Greensburg.

Breanna Yarnall (Bedford, PA/Bedford) led Penn State Altoona in total pins and scoring average, and she also posted the Lions' high game of the day. Yarnall led her team while ranking 42nd out of 70 total competitors in Friday's round with 717 pins dropped, and she finished with a team-high 143.4 average. The sophomore's 182 in the Lions' final match of the day against Pitt-Bradford was Penn State Altoona's high score for the day.

Chloe Mazza (Burlington, NJ/Burlington Township) dropped 631 pins over five games for a 126.2 per game average. Kaitlyn Estright (Norristown, PA/Archbishop Carroll) ranked third on her team in pins and average, finishing the day with 623 pins dropped for an average of 124.6. Allyson Givler (Lancaster, PA/Hempfield) downed 614 pins for a per game average of 122.8, and Katie College (Davidsville. PA/Conemaugh Township) rounded out Penn State Altoona's five with 493 pins for a scoring average of 98.6 per game in her collegiate bowling debut.

Penn State Altoona women's bowling gets back at it tomorrow, Saturday, January 29 for the second day of the three-day SFU Invitational. Saturday's format will switch to five-game baker matches determined by total pinfall, with the day's action expected to begin at 10:25 a.m.
