Smith’s Hat Trick Leads Lions in AMCC Opener

ALFRED, N.Y. – Mallorie Smith (Bellefonte, PA/Bellefonte) recorded her second career hat trick on Saturday to help propel the Penn State Altoona women's soccer team to a 3-0 victory over Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference opponent Alfred State College.

Penn State Altoona (2-4-3, 1-0 AMCC) led by three goals at halftime, and the Lions nursed their lead the rest of the way to secure victory in their first conference game of the regular season. Smith scored her fourth, fifth and sixth goals of the year for the Lions, tying for the fourth-most goals in a game and ninth-most points in a game in Penn State Altoona women's soccer history.

Adeline Baustert (Apollo, PA/Apollo-Ridge) started her ninth game of the season at goalkeeper, making four saves to post her second win and third shutout.

Dee Dee Abbott (Waldwick, NJ/Waldwick) set up Penn State Altoona's first goal when she launched a long pass from the Lions' end of the field deep into Alfred State territory. The pass found Smith streaking down the middle of the field, and she finished on a shot from 10 yards out to give her team a 1-0 lead at 16:39.

Smith netted her second goal of the day just over 14 minutes later. Following a corner kick, the ball came to Schenley Farrell (Philipsburg, PA/Philipsburg-Osceola), who headed the ball left to Sadie McConnell (New Enterprise, PA/Northern Bedford) in the box. McConnell headed the ball forward to Smith, who sent a header shot past the keeper at 30:59 to make it 2-0.

Smith sealed the hat trick by converting on a penalty kick opportunity at 36:18, ripping a shot inside the left post for her third goal of the game and team-leading sixth of the season.

Penn State Altoona held its three-goal advantage the rest of the way, and the Lions got back in the win column for the first time since September 14.

The Lions outshot Alfred State (2-6-1, 0-1 AMCC) 12-9 in attempts and 9-5 in shots on goal. Corner kicks were tied 4-4 between the teams.

Smith finished with a game-high three shots on goal, and Haley Chambers (Athens, PA/Athens) and McConnell each finished with two shots on goal. Schenley Farrell (Philipsburg, PA/Philipsburg-Osceola) and Sarah Huston (Coatesville, PA/Coatesville) also registered one shot on goal apiece.

Penn State Altoona women's soccer gets back on the pitch next Saturday, October 8, when the Lions continue AMCC play on the road against Hilbert College at 3:15 p.m.
