Women’s Soccer Downed by W&J

WASHINGTON, Pa. – The Penn State Altoona women's soccer team suffered a 6-1 loss at the hands of non-conference opponent Washington & Jefferson College on Saturday afternoon at Alexandre Stadium.

W&J (4-1-1) got three goals from Audrey Chapman. Ana Marie Duenas finished with a goal and two assists, Sydney Hoover had one goal and one assist, and Maura Heberle also scored a goal for the Presidents.

Mallorie Smith (Bellefonte, PA/Bellefonte) scored her first goal of the season for Penn State Altoona (0-5-1) in the loss. Nicole Schwartz (Clifton, NJ/Passaic County Technical Institute) started at goalkeeper and made a season-high 17 saves for the Lions.

W&J got out to a dominant start, scoring five goals in the game's first 23:07. Chapman scored two of the Presidents' first-half goals, and the home team went into the intermission with a 5-0 advantage.

Chapman scored her third goal of the game in the second half to extend W&J's lead to 6-0.

Smith netted her first tally of the season in the 69th minute, getting Penn State Altoona on the board, 6-1. Smith's goal was assisted by Rachel Rutkowski (Canonsburg, PA/Canon-McMillan).

Smith finished the day with three shot attempts, including two shots on goal. Isabella Marinelli (Florham Park, NJ/Hanover Park) had one shot on goal for the Lions.

Penn State Altoona women's soccer is back on the pitch this upcoming Wednesday, September 20, when the Lions will hit the road to face non-conference opponent Penn College at 7 p.m.
