Women’s Soccer Blanks Hilbert 3-0 to Advance in AMCC Tourney

HAMBURG, N.Y. – The No. 6 seed Penn State Altoona women's soccer team will be moving on in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Tournament, as the Lions posted a 3-0 victory over No. 3 seed Hilbert College on Saturday in a first-round playoff game at Frontier Central High School.

With the win, Penn State Altoona (5-10-2) advances to the AMCC Tournament semifinal round and will face No. 2 seed Pitt-Greensburg on Wednesday, November 1 at 7 p.m. That contest is set to take place at Hempfield High School in Greensburg.

Hilbert (6-9-1) is eliminated from the postseason with its loss.

Penn State Altoona got two goals from Mallorie Smith (Bellefonte, PA/Bellefonte) and one from Sophia Nelson (Bellwood, PA/Bellwood-Antis) in its victory. Nicole Schwartz (Clifton, NJ/Passaic County Technical Institute) started at goalkeeper and made six saves between the pipes to record her fifth win and second shutout of the season.

The Lions broke a scoreless tie at the 36:15 mark, when Smith scored her 14th goal of the season to put Penn State Altoona on the board.

Penn State Altoona tacked two more goals on to its total during the second half to put the game out of reach. Nelson found the back of the net for the third time this season at 72:13 to make it 2-0, and Smith scored her second of the game and 15th of the year at 89:48 to increase the Lions' advantage to 3-0 in the closing seconds.

Penn State Altoona finished the game with a 9-6 advantage over Hilbert in shots on goal, despite the Hawks holding a 15-13 lead in overall shot attempts. Smith led the Lions in shots, attempting four and putting three on goal, while Camryn Kurilla (Mount Wolf, PA/Northeastern) put two shots on target out of three attempts.
