Women’s Swimming Edges W&J 128-126

ALTOONA, Pa. – In its first meet of the season and home opener on Saturday afternoon, the Penn State Altoona women's swimming team pulled out a tight 128-126 victory over visiting non-conference opponent Washington & Jefferson College in the Adler Natatorium.

Penn State Altoona recorded six first place finishes as a team, including several during the second half of the meet to help the Lions overcome a deficit on the scoreboard.

Madison Coleman (Altoona, PA/Tyrone) and Grace Dangelo (State College, PA/State College) each finished with two individual first places, and they also helped the Lions take first in a relay event.

Coleman won the 100 Yard Freestyle with a time of 57.80, and she later placed first in the 50 Yard Butterfly by clocking in at 29.73. Coleman also took second place in the 50 Yard Breaststroke with a time of 35.76.

Meanwhile, Dangelo took first in the 100 Yard Butterfly when she hit the pad at 1:03.26, and she picked up her other individual first place in the 200 Yard IM with a time of 2:23.33. In the 100 Yard Backstroke, Dangelo was the runner-up with a time of 1:04.44.

Coleman and Dangelo helped put the Lions over the top in the meet's final event, the 200 Yard Freestyle Relay, when the two combined with Avery Heisey (Lancaster, PA/Conestoga Valley) and Sarah Petry (St. Benedict, PA/Cambria Heights) to achieve first place with a total time of 1:47.17.

The Lions' other first place finish came in the 50 Yard Freestyle, where Heisey edged her opponent by 0.11 seconds to claim first place with a time of 26.65.

Penn State Altoona women's swimming returns to action for its first road meet of the season next Saturday, October 23, when the Lions travel to Pittsburgh to face non-conference opponent Chatham University in a dual meet beginning at 1:00 p.m.
