Women's Swimming Achieves Two First Places, Two Records in Day Three at AMCCs

WEBSTER, N.Y. – The Penn State Altoona women's swimming team remained in third place out of six Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference squads after Friday's action, which was the third day of the four-day AMCC Championships at Webster Aquatic Center.

Penn State Behrend held down the top spot in the AMCC standings, as well as second overall in the combined AMCC-Empire 8 championships meet, with a team score of 479 points. Alfred State College was second in the AMCC and fourth overall with 417.5 points, and Penn State Altoona followed in third place in the conference and fifth overall with 363.5 points.

Wells College was in seventh place overall and fourth in the AMCC with 167 points, Pitt-Bradford was ninth overall and fifth in the AMCC with 110.5 points, and Medaille College found itself in 10th place overall and sixth in the AMCC with 14 points.

Grace Dangelo (State College, PA/State College) and Avery Heisey (Lancaster, PA/Conestoga Valley) helped lead the Lions' efforts on Friday night, as each swimmer achieved a first place AMCC finish in their respective individual swims.

Dangelo earned AMCC gold by taking first place in the conference and third overall in the 400 Yard IM 'A' final, clocking in at 4:50.67. Heisey also secured a first place AMCC finish, ranking first in the conference and fourth overall in the 100 Yard Butterfly 'A' final by clocking in at 1:03.81.

Penn State Altoona also set two new team records, one coming in an individual swim and the other happening in a relay event.

In the 200 Yard Freestyle 'A' final, Madison Coleman (Altoona, PA/Tyrone) took seventh place overall and third in the AMCC with a time of 2:01.27. Coleman's time set a new Penn State Altoona women's swimming record in that event by 0.01 seconds, surpassing the previous mark of 2:01.28, which was set by former Lion Kim Love.

In the final event of the night, the 400 Yard Medley Relay, the team of Sarah Petry (St. Benedict, PA/Cambria Heights), Hailey Toth (New Ringgold, PA/Tamaqua), Dangelo, and Heisey came together for a total time of 4:17.48 in the 'A' final to take fifth place overall and third place in the AMCC. The group set a new team record in that event, besting the previous record time of 4:21.56, which had been set by Petry, Dangelo, Coleman, and Heisey this past November 18.

Meanwhile, two Penn State Altoona swimmers competed in the 'A' final for the 100 Yard Breaststroke. Toth was ninth overall and third in the AMCC with a time of 1:14.79, while Grace Frey (Wayne, PA/Conestoga) took 10th overall and fourth in the AMCC by finishing in 1:15.65.

McKenna Holl (Hummelstown, PA/Lower Dauphin) swam in the 'A' final of the 100 Yard Backstroke, finishing in 1:06.47 to place 10th overall and fourth in the AMCC.

Penn State Altoona women's swimming returns to action tomorrow, Saturday, February 19, for the fourth and final day of this week's AMCC Championships at the Webster Aquatic Center. Tomorrow's preliminaries begin at 10:00 a.m., and the week's last finals session starts at 5:00 p.m.

On the docket for tomorrow are the 1,650 Freestyle, 200 Yard Backstroke, 100 Yard Freestyle, 200 Yard Breaststroke, 200 Yard Butterfly, and 400 Yard Freestyle Relay events.
