Women’s Swimming Overpowers W&J 168-69

WASHINGTON, Pa. – The Penn State Altoona women's swimming team hit the road for the first time this season on Saturday, when the Lions posted a 168-69 victory over non-conference opponent Washington & Jefferson College at Henry Memorial Natatorium.

Penn State Altoona totaled 12 first place finishes as a team, including three apiece from Grace Dangelo (State College, PA/State College) and Avery Heisey (Lancaster, PA/Conestoga Valley).

Dangelo took first in the 100 Yard Butterfly with a time of 1:04.73, then clinched her second win of the day in the 100 Yard Breaststroke, in which she finished in 1:17.87. Dangelo later achieved first in the 200 Yard IM, clocking in at 2:26.10.

Heisey prevailed in the 50 Yard Freestyle, recording a time of 26.75, then won the 100 Yard Freestyle in 59.40. Heisey pulled off the trifecta with a first place finish in the 50 Yard Butterfly, hitting the pad at 29.64.

Teah Sponsler (Halifax, PA/Halifax) notched two individual first place finishes. In the 50 Yard Backstroke, she came in first with a time of 31.13, and she also won the 100 Yard Backstroke with a time of 1:06.98.

Madison Coleman (Altoona, PA/Tyrone) and Sarah Petry (St. Benedict, PA/Cambria Heights) contributed one first place finish each. Coleman placed first in the 50 Yard Breaststroke with a time of 37.03, and Petry won the 1000 Yard Freestyle by clocking in at 12:03.16.

Penn State Altoona also won both of the meet's relay events.

In the meet-opening 200 Yard Medley Relay, the team of McKenna Holl (Hummelstown, PA/Lower Dauphin), Grace Frey (Wayne, PA/Conestoga), Rachel Dangelo (State College, PA/State College) and Sponsler combined for a time of 2:07.94 to take first place. In the day's final event, the 200 Yard Freestyle Relay, Heisey, Petry, Grace Dangelo, and Coleman came together for a time of 1:47.46 to secure first place.

Next up, Penn State Altoona women's swimming will take on non-conference opponent Saint Vincent College next Saturday, October 22 on the road. The meet is scheduled to start at 1:00 p.m.
