Women’s Swimming Holds Third After Second Day at AMCCs

WEBSTER, N.Y. – The Penn State Altoona women's swimming team remained in third place out of five Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference teams by the conclusion of Thursday night's finals session, which capped the second of the four-day conference championship meet at Webster Aquatic Center.

Alfred State College was the top AMCC team on the leaderboard with a score of 318 points, and Penn State Behrend was second in the conference with 262 points. Penn State Altoona took third with 241.5 points, ahead of fourth-place Wells College's 86 points and fifth-place Pitt-Bradford's 82 points. In the combined AMCC-Empire 8 meet, Penn State Altoona ranks fifth out of 10 teams through the first two days.

Penn State Altoona had swimmers qualify to compete in the 'A' finals of each of the four swims during Thursday night's session, and the Lions set new team records in two of them.

The evening's first event was the 500 Yard Freestyle, where Sarah Petry (St. Benedict, PA/Cambria Heights) swam in the 'A' final and finished fifth overall and third in the AMCC with a time of 5:22.79. Petry's time set a new Penn State Altoona women's swimming record, beating the previous mark of 5:24.30 set by former Lion Kim Love.

Madison Coleman (Altoona, PA/Tyrone) also made the cut for the 'A' final of the 500 Yard Freestyle, clocking in at 5:28.40 to place seventh overall and fourth in the AMCC.

In the next event, the 200 Yard IM, the Lions had two more swimmers qualify to compete in the 'A' final.

Grace Dangelo (State College, PA/State College) won first place in the AMCC and fourth place overall in the swim, recording a time of 2:14.54. Audrey Weaver (Dillsburg, PA/Northern York) clinched fourth place in the AMCC and ninth place overall by finishing in 2:20.90.

In the next event, the 50 Yard Freestyle, Avery Heisey (Lancaster, PA/Conestoga Valley) swam in the 'A' final and compiled a time of 25.29 to place third in the AMCC and tie for fourth overall.

The night wrapped up with the 200 Yard Freestyle Relay, and in the 'A' final of that event, Penn State Altoona's team of Petry, Dangelo, Heisey, and Coleman came together to post a time of 1:40.47 to finish second in the AMCC and third overall. Their time set a new Lions record in that event, surpassing the previous mark of 1:42.13 that the same four swimmers set in last season's AMCC Championships on February 17, 2022.

The AMCC Championships continue tomorrow, Friday, February 17, for day three of the event. Friday's preliminaries will start at 10 a.m., and the finals sessions begins at 5 p.m.
