Women’s Tennis Edges Mount Aloysius 5-4

ALTOONA, Pa. – The Penn State Altoona women's tennis team picked up its second straight win and first Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference victory of the season on Sunday afternoon, when the Lions defeated nearby conference rival Mount Aloysius College 5-4 at the Adler Tennis Courts.

Mount Aloysius (1-3, 1-3 AMCC) held a 2-1 lead after doubles play, winning the first two matches by scores of 8-5 and 8-1. Penn State Altoona (2-3, 1-1 AMCC) picked up a point in the No. 3 doubles match, where Jenna Bartlett (Bellwood, PA/Bellwood-Antis)/Stephanie Swain (Yadkin County, NC/Forbush) received a forfeit win.

Forfeits tilted the balance in singles play, where Penn State Altoona's Dabin Shin (Palisades Park, NJ/Palisades Park) and Jiayi Zhang (Ridgewood, NJ/Ridgewood) got victories in the No. 5 and No. 6 spots courtesy of Mount Aloysius forfeits, helping the Lions climb into the lead.

In the four singles matches that were played, the Lions and Mounties split. Mount Aloysius won the No. 1 and No. 2 matches, while Penn State Altoona picked up points with wins in the No. 3 and No. 4 spots. Swain fought to achieve her third win of the season in the No. 3 singles match, where she prevailed 7-6 (9-7), 6-2. Bartlett improved to a perfect 5-0 overall this season in her first appearance in the No. 4 singles slot, where she won comfortably by scores of 6-1, 6-1.

Next up, Penn State Altoona women's tennis starts a string of four straight home matches, all of them against AMCC opponents. That homestand opens this upcoming Friday, October 1, when the Lions host Penn State Behrend for a 4:00 p.m. match at the Adler Tennis Courts.
