Women’s Volleyball 2023 Season Preview

The Penn State Altoona women's volleyball team enters its 2023 season with the continued expectation to be a contender within the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference.

The Lions were selected fifth in this year's edition of the AMCC preseason coaches' poll, following a 2022 season in which the team went 11-13 overall, including a 4-3 record in-conference. Penn State Altoona secured the fifth seed in the AMCC postseason tournament last November and reached the semifinal round, where the Lions suffered a tight 3-2 loss to Alfred State.

Penn State Altoona's roster features nine returners, led by two athletes who were named as "Players to Watch" in the preseason poll: senior outside hitter Lacee Barnhart (Bellefonte, PA/Bald Eagle) and junior middle blocker Taylor Myers (Morrisdale, PA/West Branch).

Barnhart was a second-team All-AMCC selection last year, when she finished fourth in digs (352) and digs per set (3.83), fifth in kills per set (2.95), and seventh in kills (271) and points per set (3.3). Myers also posted a strong 2022 season for Penn State Altoona, ranking fifth in the AMCC in solo blocks (17), sixth in service aces (37), ninth in total blocks (45), and 10th in blocks per set (0.49) and aces per set (0.40).

Other returners for Penn State Altoona include senior outside hitter/right side Karlie Feathers (Bellwood, PA/Bellwood-Antis), junior middle blocker Makenna Port (Bellefonte, PA/Bellefonte), junior setter/defensive specialist Abigail Brinker (Lock Haven, PA/PHAA), junior libero/defensive specialist Anna Batrus (Altoona, PA/Altoona), sophomore outside hitter/right side Jadeyn Price (Altoona, PA/Altoona), sophomore outside hitter Baileigh Mount (Macungie, PA/Emmaus), and sophomore middle blocker/right side Morgan Fussell (Blairsville, GA/Union County).

Penn State Altoona also welcomes five freshmen to the fold: outside hitters Megan Leemann (Williamstown, NY/Altmar-Parish-Williamstown) and Lia Simanski (Altoona, PA/Bishop Guilfoyle), middle hitter Jillian Taylor (Irvona, PA/Glendale), and setters Julia Emel (Woodward, PA/Penns Valley) and Gabriella Serra (Queens, NY/Benjamin Cardozo).

The Lions open their season on Friday, September 1 and Saturday, September 2 in the Bearcat Challenge, hosted by Saint Vincent College.
