Penn State Altoona Postpones Golf, Tennis Competition this Fall

ALTOONA, Pa. – Penn State Altoona Athletics announced on Wednesday that intercollegiate competition for its golf and tennis programs has been postponed for the fall semester, due to ongoing challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The decision follows the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference's announcement last Monday, which postponed most fall semester sports but left the possibility open of intercollegiate competition in men's and women's golf and men's and women's tennis. However, as obstacles associated with COVID-19 continue to arise for Penn State Altoona Athletics and across college sports, the determination was made to postpone golf and tennis play for the fall.

The decision also comes on the heels of La Roche University's announcement earlier in the day on Wednesday to postpone golf and tennis competition this upcoming semester, putting the AMCC below the minimum number of four active teams needed to hold a conference championship.

Penn State Altoona's men's and women's golf and men's and women's tennis programs now join the campus' men's and women's soccer, men's and women's basketball, and women's volleyball programs as having intercollegiate competition postponed for the fall semester.

As with the previously postponed fall semester sports, Penn State Altoona and the AMCC intend to shift intercollegiate competition for golf and tennis into the spring semester. The conference's Presidents' Council, along with sport-by-sport working groups, will continue to plan a return to conference play in the spring semester for all of the postponed sports.

Decisions regarding intercollegiate competition for two other fall semester sports, men's and women's swimming and women's bowling, are expected to be made by the AMCC on September 15. Each of those teams' schedules overlap the fall and spring semesters, but begin during fall.

Penn State Altoona Athletics will continue to prioritize the health, safety, and wellbeing of its student-athletes in all decisions made regarding sports competition during the COVID-19 pandemic.
