Bio

John Carey is the Assistant Director of Athletics at Penn State Altoona, a position to which he was named on February 14, 2025. Prior to that, he served as the Athletics department's Director of Recreation and Facilities since 2010.

Carey oversees the daily operations and facilities for Penn State Altoona Athletics, including running recreational programs and supervising the department's maintenance workers and part-time and student staff members. Carey also coordinates the hosting of events at Athletics facilities by both internal and external groups.

Additionally, Carey served as the head coach of the Penn State Altoona varsity women's bowling program from 2018-21.

Carey is a native of Altoona. He graduated from Altoona Area High School in 1998 before attending York College of Pennsylvania, where he earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Sport Management. In 2009, he earned his Masters Degree in Sport Management, with a special emphasis in Intercollegiate Athletics, from California University of Pennsylvania.

Before joining Penn State Altoona, Carey worked for the Central Blair Recreation Commission in Altoona, where he managed youth and adult recreation programs. He still remains very active in the local sports scene, serving as both coach and player.

Carey, a resident of Altoona, has two sons, Kadyn and Jonah.
