La Roche Sweeps Lions in Wednesday Doubleheader

PITTSBURGH, Pa. – Penn State Altoona baseball lost a pair of Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference games on Wednesday, when the Lions were swept in a doubleheader with La Roche University at the Baierl Athletic Complex.

Penn State Altoona (4-12, 2-6 AMCC) struggled to get the bats going, as La Roche (6-0, 6-0 AMCC) prevailed 7-1 in game one and took game two by a score of 14-1.

Game One: La Roche 7, Penn State Altoona 1

The Lions managed just one run on two hits, and La Roche pulled away late, turning a two-run lead into a six-run lead in the fifth inning.

Tyler Manger (Lindenhurst, NY/Lindenhurst) pitched a complete game for the Lions, going six innings and striking out four batters. It was the right-hander's first complete game effort of the season.

Catcher Cumming (Altoona, PA/Altoona) and Jake Hillard (State College, PA/State College) had hits for Penn State Altoona, and Grayson McClain (Mount Union, PA/Mount Union) scored his team's lone run.

Penn State Altoona scored the game's first run in the top of the first. McClain led off with a walk, moved up to second on a groundout, then advanced to third on Cumming's single. An outfield error on the play allowed McClain to score.

La Roche tied the score in the bottom of the second on Tristan Tinney's solo home run, and Jason Swope's two-run single in the third put the Redhawks on top, 3-1.

The home team used the long ball to expand its lead to 7-1 in the fifth, when Ryan Lynn's three-run homer and Jay Novak's solo shot tacked four more runs on to La Roche's lead.

Game Two: La Roche 14, Penn State Altoona 1

Penn State Altoona saw more strong pitching from La Roche in game two, as the Redhawks held the Lions to one run on five hits.

Jared Ennis (Richboro, PA/Council Rock South) went 2-for-3 with a double and a run batted in, while Hunter Breon (Boiling Springs, PA/Boiling Springs), Richard Carey (Milton, DE/Cape Henlopen), and Cole Brechbill (Hagerstown, MD/North Hagerstown) finished with one hit each, with Carey's being a double. McClain again accounted for Penn State Altoona's only run.

Adam Wildasin (Hershey, PA/Hershey) started on the mound and tossed six innings, taking the loss. Bryson Byers (Chambersburg, PA/Chambersburg) and Hunter Johnson (Shippensburg, PA/Shippensburg) made appearances out of the bullpen.

Dylan Urban's RBI double in the second and Novak's RBI single in the third helped La Roche get out to a 2-0 lead. In a fifth, an Austin Hoffman solo homer and another Novak RBI base hit made it 4-0.

Penn State Altoona got on the board in the top of the sixth, when McClain drew a walk, advanced to second on Breon's single, and scored on Ennis' double.

But La Roche responded with a three-run home run by Hoffman in the bottom of the sixth to increase its advantage to 7-1. The Redhawks went on to double their run total over the next two innings, getting four runs across in the seventh and scoring three more in the eighth.

Penn State Altoona baseball returns home this Saturday, April 17, when the Lions will host AMCC opponent Pitt-Bradford for a doubleheader starting at 1:00 p.m.
