Lions Split Sunday Doubleheader With Pitt-Greensburg

ALTOONA, Pa. – The Penn State Altoona baseball team returned to action for its first games in over a week on Sunday afternoon, when the Lions hosted Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference opponent Pitt-Greensburg for a doubleheader at Stewart Athletic Field.

Penn State Altoona (7-13, 5-7 AMCC) was unable to get on track in game one, and Pitt-Greensburg (4-18, 3-9 AMCC) prevailed 8-2. But the Lions bounced back to win game two 8-7 in 10 innings to come away with the doubleheader split.

Game One: Pitt-Greensburg 8, Penn State Altoona 2

Penn State Altoona struggled to get the bats going, managing just four hits and a pair of runs. Meanwhile, Pitt-Greensburg took advantage of several opportunities with runners on base, and the Bobcats won game one by six runs.

Anthony Iannizzi (Leesburg, VA/Heritage) hit his first collegiate home run for the Lions, finishing the game 1-for-3 with two runs scored and one run batted in. Jared Ennis (Richboro, PA/Council Rock South) was 1-for-3 with a double and an RBI. Hunter Breon (Boiling Springs, PA/Boiling Springs) and Cole Brechbill (Hagerstown, MD/North Hagerstown) accounted for the other two Penn State Altoona hits.

Jake Bradish (Latrobe, PA/Greater Latrobe) started at pitcher for the Lions and went 5 1/3 innings, suffering his first loss of the season. Cameron Dubbs (Palmyra, PA/Palmyra) tossed 1 2/3 innings out of the bullpen, allowing no runs on two hits and a walk while striking out two batters.

Pitt-Greensburg scored the game's first runs in the top of the third, when Ben Green's two-run double to left and Jace Cappellini's two RBI single to left put the Bobcats up 4-0.

Penn State Altoona got on the board in the bottom of the third, when Iannizzi led off the frame with a line drive home run over the left field fence.

However, the Bobcats extended their lead to 6-1 in the top of the fifth on Devin Renzi's two RBI single through the left side of the infield.

The Lions added to their total in the bottom of the fifth, when Ennis' RBI double to left got Penn State Altoona to within four, 6-2.

But Pitt-Greensburg padded its lead with two more runs in the sixth, when Brody Bonadio stole home and Austyn Carson drove in another run with his base hit to left.

Game Two: Penn State Altoona 8, Pitt-Greensburg 7 (Final/10 innings)

After their sluggish game one loss, the Lions responded with a well-played second game. Penn State Altoona got its offense going and pulled out a one-run win in 10 innings, with Ennis delivering the walkoff sacrifice fly in the bottom of the 10th.

Kyle Glass (Imler, PA/Claysburg-Kimmel) was one of four different Lion batters to finish with a multi-hit effort, going a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate with two RBI and one walk. Jake Hillard (State College, PA/State College) went 3-for-5 with two doubles and three runs scored.

Ennis was 2-for-4 with a double, a run scored, and the game-winning RBI, and Breon went 2-for-5.

Catcher Cumming (Altoona, PA/Altoona) hit his AMCC-leading eighth home run this season, a two-run shot in the first inning, and Richard Carey (Milton, DE/Cape Henlopen) contributed an RBI double.

Tyler Manger (Lindenhurst, NY/Lindenhurst) started on the mound for the Lions and posted his longest outing of the season, pitching eight innings and yielding five earned runs while striking out three. Glass tossed the final two innings in relief, allowing one run and picking up his third win of the season.

Penn State Altoona's bats were ignited in the bottom of the first inning, when Ennis' double to center was followed by Cumming's home run that put the Lions on the board.

Pitt-Greensburg made it a one-run game in the top of the second, when Michael Sullivan doubled and later scored on a fielding error.

But the Lions got that run back in the bottom of the fourth. Hillard led off the frame with a double to center, advanced to third on a flyout, and then scored on a wild pitch to make it 3-1.

The Bobcats pulled back to within one in the top of the fifth, when Dylan DeRoss' two-out RBI single cut the Lions' lead to 3-2. The visitors proceeded to leap ahead in the top of the sixth, when Carson's three-run homer to left gave Pitt-Greensburg a 5-3 advantage.

But Penn State Altoona answered with three runs in the bottom of the sixth to work their way back on top. Hillard reached on a throwing error to start the inning, and Timothy Richard (Douglassville, PA/Daniel Boone) drew a walk to put two on with no outs. The next batter, Carey, doubled to left-center to score one run, and Glass followed with a base hit through the right side to tie the score 5-5. Carey scored from third on a double play in the next at-bat to put Penn State Altoona back in front, 6-5.

Pitt-Greensburg knotted the score in the top half of the eighth, when Jordan Cavanaugh's RBI double to right-center made it 6-6. But the Lions answered quickly again, as Glass' RBI base hit into right field drove in the go-ahead run in the bottom of the eighth.

The Bobcats were not finished, however, tying the game again in the top of the ninth on Chandler Goodwin's solo home run to center. The Lions threatened in the bottom of the ninth, loading the bases with two outs, but Pitt-Greensburg induced a flyout to end the inning and send the game into extras.

After a scoreless top of the 10th, Penn State Altoona capitalized to win the game in the bottom half of the inning. After Iannizzi reached on a fielder's choice, Grayson McClain's (Mount Union, PA/Mount Union) single up the middle put runners at the corners with one out. Breon was hit by a pitch to load the bases, and Ennis followed with a sac fly to left that scored Iannizzi from third to give the Lions the walkoff win.

Penn State Altoona baseball continues its homestand versus AMCC opponent Mount Aloysius College this Tuesday, April 27, hosting the Mounties for a doubleheader starting at 1:00 p.m.
