Lions Sweep Mounties to Even Conference Record

ALTOONA, Pa. – Penn State Altoona baseball pulled its Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference record back up to .500 on Tuesday afternoon, when the Lions swept nearby conference rival Mount Aloysius College in a doubleheader at Stewart Athletic Field.

The Lions (9-13, 7-7 AMCC) posted their first shutout of the season in game one, blanking Mount Aloysius (16-10, 10-4 AMCC) by a final score of 4-0. After a shaky start to the second game, Penn State Altoona tightened things up and prevailed 11-9 and earn the doubleheader sweep.

Game One: Penn State Altoona 4, Mount Aloysius 0

The Lions were led by solid pitching and defense in the first half of the doubleheader, and the team's offense did enough to help secure the win.

Kyle Glass (Imler, PA/Claysburg-Kimmel) improved to 4-1 on the mound this season, tossing his first collegiate shutout in his third complete game effort of the spring. The right-hander pitched seven innings and struck out two batters, scattering eight hits and issuing two walks while keeping the Mounties off of the scoreboard.

Grayson McClain (Mount Union, PA/Mount Union) and Catcher Cumming (Altoona, PA/Altoona) combined for four of the Lions' six hits. McClain was 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored, while Cumming went 2-for-3 with one run batted in.

Jake Hillard (State College, PA/State College) finished 1-for-2 with a triple, an RBI, and a run scored, and Timothy Richard (Douglassville, PA/Daniel Boone) was also 1-for-2 with an RBI.

Penn State Altoona established an early lead by scoring a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning. Cumming's RBI single to center put one run on the board, and Hillard followed with a sacrifice fly to right that made it 2-0.

Hunter Breon (Boiling Springs, PA/Boiling Springs) tacked a run on to the Lions' total in the fifth, when his sac fly to right extended the Penn State Altoona advantage to 3-0.

A strong defensive play in the top of the sixth kept Mount Aloysius off of the board. With a runner at first and two outs, Trap Wentling doubled to center. But Wentling was thrown out on the play trying to extend the double into a triple, as he was tagged out at third before the lead runner crossed home plate to preserve the shutout.

The Lions increased their lead to 4-0 in the bottom half of the sixth with another sac fly, as Richard's flyout to left scored Hillard from third.

Penn State Altoona again erased a Mount Aloysius scoring opportunity in the top of the seventh with heads-up defense. With runners at first and second and one out, Ryan Leonard flew out to center, and the lead Mount Aloysius runner – who attempted to advance to third on the play – was ruled out at second base after not tagging up.

Game Two: Penn State Altoona 11, Mount Aloysius 9

The Lions overcame a four-run, four-error top of the first inning to post a well-played game the rest of the way. Penn State Altoona finished with 11 runs on 18 hits, and the Lions also got more effective pitching on the mound.

Cumming had a team-high four hits, going 4-for-5 with one RBI and one run scored. Richard Carey (Milton, DE/Cape Henlopen) went 3-for-4 with a double, two runs scored, one RBI, and a walk.

McClain hit 2-for-4 with a run scored, and Glass was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and a walk. Jared Ennis (Richboro, PA/Council Rock South) was 2-for-5 with a run scored.

Hillard hit 2-for-5 with three RBI and a run scored, hitting his fourth home run of the season. Quinten Moslak (Philipsburg, PA/Philipsburg-Osceola) was 1-for-3 with the go-ahead three-run homer, his first of the season.

Breon went 1-for-2 with an RBI, a run scored, a stolen base, and a game-high three walks drawn. Richard had a double, an RBI, and a run scored.

Adam Wildasin (Hershey, PA/Hershey) got the start at pitcher for the Lions and finished with a no decision. In 5 1/3 innings of work, he struck out four batters and held Mount Aloysius to three earned runs.

Alex Kitko (Houtzdale, PA/Moshannon Valley) pitched 1/3 inning out of the bullpen, and Sam Homan (Altoona, PA/Bishop Guilfoyle) followed with 2 2/3 innings in relief with three strikeouts to pick up his first collegiate win. Hunter Johnson (Shippensburg, PA/Shippensburg) tossed the final 2/3 inning to record his first save of the season.

Penn State Altoona spotted Mount Aloysius a 4-0 lead after the top of the first, as the Lions committed four errors in the frame to help the visitors get out in front early.

But Penn State Altoona responded with a six-run bottom of the first to help atone for their miscues. Cumming's RBI single to center got things started, and Hillard followed with a three-run home run to left that tied the score 4-4. Later in the inning, Carey scored on a wild pitch and Breon drew a bases-loaded walk to make it 6-4.

Mount Aloysius made it a one-run game in the top of the fourth, as Cody Smith's two-out RBI single up the middle cut the Lions' lead to 6-5. The Mounties got back on top in the sixth inning, when Leonard's RBI groundout, Jeremy Iellimo's RBI single to right, and Joshua Brown's bases-loaded walk gave the visitors an 8-6 lead.

But Penn State Altoona reclaimed the lead with one swing of the bat in the bottom of the seventh. After Carey and Glass walked, Moslak homered to left to put the Lions back into the lead, 9-8.

Richard's RBI double to right and Carey's RBI single to center in the bottom of the eighth added some insurance for the Lions, who expanded their lead to 11-8.

The Mounties threatened in the top of the ninth, but they were stopped short of a comeback. Graham Spitz's pinch-hit RBI double cut the Penn State Altoona lead to 11-9 and put two runners in scoring position with two outs. But Johnson induced a groundout for the Lions, and the home team wrapped up the doubleheader sweep.

Penn State Altoona baseball finishes its regular season schedule at home this Saturday, May 1, hosting AMCC opponent Hilbert College for a doubleheader beginning at 12:00 p.m. at Stewart Athletic Field.

Prior to Saturday's games, the Lions will recognize their senior players in a Senior Day ceremony.
