Baseball Loses to Hope in Last Florida Games

DAVENPORT, Fla. – The Penn State Altoona baseball team suffered a pair of losses in its last day competing in the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational on Saturday morning, when the Lions were swept in a doubleheader by Hope College at Northeast Regional Park.

Penn State Altoona (5-9) lost both games of the doubleheader in the final inning. In game one, Hope (4-7) broke a 3-3 in the seventh inning to win 6-3. In game two, the Flying Dutchmen scored in walk-off fashion, topping the Lions 10-9.

Game One: Hope 6, Penn State Altoona 3

The Lions and Flying Dutchmen found themselves in a tie game heading into the seventh inning, but Hope scored three runs in the top of the seventh and handed Penn State Altoona a three-run loss.

Fred Guarino IV (Waynesboro, PA/Waynesboro) was 1-for-2 with a double, an RBI, and a run scored, and Alex Hlivia (Pennsylvania Furnace, PA/State College) went 1-for-3 with a double and two RBI. Joe O'Connor (West Grove, PA/Avon Grove) was 1-for-3 with a run scored, and Tyreke Green (Altoona, PA/Altoona) also had a hit.

Hlivia's double represented the 100th hit of his collegiate career.

Sam Homan (Altoona, PA/Bishop Guilfoyle) started on the bump and finished with a no decision, tossing four innings and allowing one run. Cole Suba (Pittsburgh, PA/North Allegheny) went one inning in relief, and Sean Wing (Staten Island, NY/St. Peter's) tossed two innings out of the pen and suffered the loss.

Hope made it 1-0 in the top of the third, when Elliot Peter's fielder's choice grounder scored Caden Seabaugh from third base.

Penn State Altoona got on the board and into the lead with a three-run bottom of the fourth. After O'Connor's infield single and Hillard's walk put two runners aboard, Guarino drove in one run with a double to left, and Hlivia followed with a two-run double to left to put the Lions up 3-1.

Hope struck back in the top of the fifth, using a Ben Stratman RBI single and Peter RBI double to knot the score at 3-3. The score remained tied until the Flying Dutchmen got three across in the top of the seventh to jump into the lead. RBI singles by Peter and Jace DeMann put Hope ahead by two, and Carter Perry's RBI grounder made it 6-3.

The Flying Dutchmen retired Penn State Altoona in order in the bottom of the seventh, and the Lions suffered a game-one loss.

Game Two: Hope 10, Penn State Altoona 9

Penn State Altoona battled back from an 8-2 deficit after two innings and tied the score at 9-9 in the top of the seventh. But Hope came back with a run in the bottom half of the seventh to deal the Lions a walk-off loss.

Brian Chelli (West Hartford, CT/Hall) went 2-for-3 with a double, four RBI, and a stolen base. James St. Laurent-Friend (Wake Forest, NC/Wake Forest) was 2-for-4 with a double.

Green walked three times to go along with two runs scored, two stolen bases, a hit, and an RBI. Hlivia scored three runs, swiped two bags, and walked twice. Jake Hillard (State College, PA/State College) and Zach Ingold (Pittsburgh, PA/Baldwin) each had a hit and two runs scored.

Michael Labisi (Mountainside, NJ/Governor Livingston) made the start at pitcher for the Lions and went one inning, finishing with a no decision. Kyle Latham (Milton, GA/Cambridge) tossed the next four innings in relief, and Carter Piercey (West Chester, PA/Bayard Rustin) pitched one inning and suffered the loss.

Penn State Altoona scored the game's first runs in the top of the first. A double steal resulted in Hlivia scoring from third, and Chelli's RBI single to right later in the frame made it 2-0.

Hope countered with a six-run bottom of the first. Corbin Bennetts' RBI single started the scoring, and Brenden Collins was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to bring in the tying run. Peter drove in a pair with his single to left, DeMann had an RBI double to left center, and Perry's RBI groundout to shortstop made it 6-2.

Hope added to its lead in the second, as Stratman's RBI single and Cade Seabaugh's steal of home made it 8-2.

Penn State Altoona got three runs back in the top of the third inning. Ingold led off the inning with a walk and later scored on Hillard's fielder's choice grounder. Chelli followed that with a two-run double to left, trimming the Hope lead to 8-5.

The Flying Dutchmen got one back in the bottom half of the third, as Al Money's RBI single up the middle increased the Hope advantage to 9-5.

Penn State Altoona answered in the top of the fourth. Green's RBI single to right brought in one run, and another double steal allowed Hlivia to score from third base, making it 9-7.

The Lions proceeded to tie the game in the top of the seventh. Green started the inning with a walk, and Hillard's double to left center put both runners in scoring position. Chelli came next with a sacrifice fly to center, and after a groundout, he scored when St. Laurent-Friend reached on a two-out error, knotting the score at 9-9.

But Hope responded with the go-ahead score in the bottom of the seventh. The Flying Dutchmen loaded the bases with no outs on a single, hit by pitch, and an error. DeMann drove in the winning run for Hope with his RBI single down the left-field line, and the Flying Dutchmen walked off as winners.

Next up, Penn State Altoona baseball returns to Pennsylvania and will have its home opener this upcoming Tuesday, March 18. The Lions will host non-conference opponent Messiah University for a single, nine-inning game starting at 3:30 p.m. at Stewart Athletic Field.
