Baseball Splits Twinbill at Wilson

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. – The Penn State Altoona baseball team returned to action on Friday for its second doubleheader in as many days, facing non-conference opponent Wilson College for a pair at Henninger Field.

Wilson (4-13) prevailed 11-2 in game one, before Penn State Altoona (8-12) countered with a 15-9 victory in game two.

Game One: Wilson 11, Penn State Altoona 2

The Lions fell behind 4-0 in the first inning and were unable to dig out of their hole, as Wilson went on to win by nine.

Brian Chelli (West Hartford, CT/Hall) was 2-for-3 with a double, two RBI, and a stolen base. Tyreke Green (Altoona, PA/Altoona) also batted 2-for-3 and stole a base, and Aidan Donovan (Staten Island, NY/St. Peter's) and Benjamin Ettien (Media, PA/Penncrest) had one hit apiece.

Eli Wiles (Kittanning, PA/Armstrong) made the start at pitcher for Penn State Altoona, going four innings and taking the loss. Ryan Jackson (Landisville, PA/Hempfield) pitched one inning in relief, and Zach Ingold (Pittsburgh, PA/Baldwin) tossed a scoreless inning with three strikeouts.

Wilson grabbed a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Harry Middlebrooks was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to bring in the day's first run, and a two-run single by Ryan Torres and a Lion error put the Phoenix up by four.

Penn State Altoona cut its deficit in half in the top of the third. Donovan led off with a base hit to right, Michael Labisi (Mountainside, NJ/Governor Livingston) drew a walk, and Green loaded the base with his bunt single. One batter later, Chelli plated a pair with his double to left, bringing the Lions back to within two, 4-2.

Wilson got a run back in the bottom of the third on a Tony Scott RBI single, and Tyler Smith's two-run homer in the fourth gave the Phoenix a 7-2 advantage. The home team added four more runs to its total in the fifth on a pair of two-run singles from Tyler O'Brien and Middlebrooks, and Wilson ultimately handed Penn State Altoona an 11-2 loss.

Game Two: Penn State Altoona 15, Wilson 9

The Lions bounced back from their loss in game one to record 14 hits and score 15 runs, overpowering Wilson by a score of 15-9. Penn State Altoona swiped nine bags as a team, the third-highest total of stolen bases in a game in program history.

Jake Hillard (State College, PA/State College) went 3-for-5 with two doubles, four RBI, three runs scored, and two stolen bases. Chelli also had a three-hit game, finishing 3-for-4 with a double, a triple, two RBI, two runs scored, and a stolen base.

Green was 2-for-3 with his second home run of the season, three runs scored, two stolen bases, and one RBI. James St. Laurent-Friend (Wake Forest, NC/Wake Forest) hit 2-for-4 with a double, an RBI, a run scored, a walk, and a stolen base, and Alex Hlivia (Pennsylvania Furnace, PA/State College) was 2-for-4 with a double, two RBI, two runs scored, and a stolen base.

Sam Homan (Altoona, PA/Bishop Guilfoyle) got the ball for game two, and the left-hander went 4 1/3 innings, struck out three batters, and picked up his first win of season. Sean Wing (Staten Island, NY/St. Peter's) pitched the final 2 2/3 innings and struck out four.

Penn State Altoona jumped on Wilson in the top of the first, when the Lions got five runs across. Back-to-back RBI singles from Hillard and Chelli scored Altoona's first runs, and Chelli later came home on a wild pitch to make it 3-0. Fred Guarino IV's (Waynesboro, PA/Waynesboro) RBI groundout to shortstop gave his team a four-run advantage, and Friend's run-scoring double down the left-field line increased the Lions' lead to 5-0.

In the top of the second, Penn State Altoona scored another run when Green led off with a bunt single and later came home on Joe O'Connor's (West Grove, PA/Avon Grove) sac fly to right.

The Lions boosted their lead to 10-0 in the third. Hlivia's RBI single to left center, Hillard's two-RBI double to left, and a Chelli RBI double to left got Penn State Altoona's run total to double digits.

Wilson got on the board in the bottom of the third, when RBI singles from Samuel Martin and Middlebrooks, along with a run coming home on a Lion fielding error, made it 10-3.

Penn State Altoona got a run back with one swing of the bat in the top of the fifth, as Green led off with a solo shot to left that put the Lions' advantage at 11-3.

Wilson narrowed the gap to two runs in the bottom half of the fifth, when the Phoenix scored six to trim Penn State Altoona's lead to 11-9.

But the Lions responded with four runs in the top of the seventh to pad their lead. RBI doubles to left by Hlivia and Hillard accounted for a pair of runs, and Hillard scored on a throwing error after he stole third to make it 14-9. Penn State Altoona got to 15-9 when Chelli scored on a Corey Chamberlain (Claysburg, PA/Claysburg-Kimmel) groundout to shortstop.

The Lions kept their six-run lead and finished the day with a victory over Wilson.

Next up, Penn State Altoona baseball begins its Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference schedule on Tuesday, April 1, when the Lions travel to Pittsburgh to face La Roche University in a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
