Men’s Basketball Falls to Olivet in Sunday Matchup

OLIVET, Mich. – The Penn State Altoona men's basketball team ended its Michigan road trip on Sunday afternoon with an 82-68 loss to The University of Olivet at the Cutler Event Center.

The Lions (1-4) trimmed down on turnovers, but still struggled from the field, shooting just 32.3 percent as a team from the floor. Olivet (2-2) held a 38-32 advantage at the half and maintained their lead through the second half.

Mason Bush (Pittsburgh, PA/Seneca Valley) led all scorers in the game for Penn State Altoona with a season-high 25 points, and he also dished out a team-best three assists to go along with five rebounds and two steals. Jarrett Gardner (Live Oak, FL/Suwannee) added a double-double off the bench with 10 points and a team-high 10 rebounds.

Olivet had four players finish in double figures, led by Nathan Richardson's 17 points and Ryan Bart's 16 points. Lee Hardy and Noah Wiswary scored 15 points apiece.

Down in the first half, Penn State Altoona came back from a deficit to make it a one-point game after three-pointers from Justin Sheetz (Eldersburg, MD/Liberty) and Bush that made it 21-20 by the 11:02 mark. Olivet grew its lead, but Penn State Altoona got it back to a four-point difference with 1:41 left in the half, following back-to-back treys from Bush that made it 36-32. Olivet got a bucket before halftime, and the home team went into the locker room with a 38-32 advantage.

Penn State Altoona made it a one-point game early in the second half, as a layup from Elliot Johansson (Stockholm, Sweden/Tibble Gymnasium) and another three-pointer from Bush trimmed the Comets' lead to 38-37. But Olivet went on a 9-0 run to expand its lead to 10 points, 47-37.

Penn State Altoona got back to within four points, 64-60, with 6:09 to play after a layup and foul shot by Bush that cut the Olivet lead to 64-60. But the Comets increased their lead over the rest of the period and ultimately won by 14 points.

Penn State Altoona opens Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference play next, as the Lions travel to play Pitt-Greensburg on Wednesday, November 29 at 7 p.m.
