Men’s Basketball Downed by Hilbert

HAMBURG, N.Y. – The Penn State Altoona men's basketball team suffered an 81-71 loss to Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference opponent Hilbert College on Saturday in the Hafner Recreation Center.

Penn State Altoona (6-11, 5-5 AMCC) fell behind 41-33 by halftime, and Hilbert (9-7, 5-4 AMCC) limited the Lions to a 39.1 percent field goal percentage as a team to finish the game with a 10-point win.

Dwayne Jones (Philadelphia, PA/Greater Johnstown) recorded his sixth double-double of the season for the Lions with 19 points and 11 rebounds. Mason Bush (Pittsburgh, PA/Seneca Valley) added 17 points, including a 4-for-6 showing from three-point range. Jahmar White (Yigo, Guam/St. Paul Christian School) chipped in eight points and five assists.

Hilbert's Quran Briggs and Edward Perez tied for the game-high in scoring with 20 points apiece.

Hilbert opened the game with a 6-0 lead, but Penn State Altoona fought back to eventually tie the score at 12-12, following two Jones free throws. A Justin Sheetz (Eldersburg, MD/Liberty) dunk at 12:02 put the Lions up, 14-12, and Bush's three-pointer just under a minute later made it 17-15. But the Hawks went on a 14-2 run, capped by a pair of Briggs layups that gave the home team a 29-19 advantage by the 8:18 mark.

Hilbert maintained a steady lead over the Lions the rest of the half, and after a jump shot by Jones with 35 seconds left, the teams went into the intermission with the Hawks holding a 41-33 advantage.

Penn State Altoona came out of the gates hot to start the second half, using three-pointers by Bush and Braelen Cage (Lorton, VA/Hayfield Secondary) and a dunk by Jones to trim the deficit to four, 45-41. Bush connected again from three-point range to make it a one-point game, 45-44, at 18:12. A Kevin Woodland, Jr. (Great Mills, MD/Great Mills) layup just over two minutes later kept it at a one-possession game, with Hilbert up 49-47. Hilbert did not relinquish its lead, however, and the Hawks outscored the Lions 12-2 over the next seven minutes to hold a 61-49 advantage by the 9:13 mark.

The Lions made a late push, as a Jones dunk and Sheetz layup helped Penn State Altoona cut its deficit down to four, 66-62, with just over three-and-a-half minutes to play. But Hilbert did not allow the Lions to get any closer the rest of the way, as Penn State Altoona ultimately suffered a 10-point loss.

Next up, Penn State Altoona men's basketball will return to Adler Arena for the team's first home game since January 10, as the Lions will host AMCC foe Pitt-Greensburg this upcoming Wednesday, January 24 at 7 p.m.
