Men’s Golf Holds Second After Day One of AMCC Championships

ERIE, Pa. – After the first day of the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Championships on Sunday afternoon at Peek'n Peak Golf Resort, the Penn State Altoona men's golf team found itself in second place out of six teams.

The Lions compiled a team score of 334 in the tournament's opening round to earn second, following first place Penn State Behrend and its score of 320.

"Obviously, we are disappointed in our play today, but the beauty of this championship is that we have a second day to redeem ourselves," said Penn State Altoona head coach Tom Koehle. "Our goal tomorrow is to play a good, solid team round, eliminate major mistakes, and see where it leaves us."

Pitt-Bradford was in third place by the end of Sunday's round with 349, Mount Aloysius College took up fourth with 360, Pitt-Greensburg was fifth with 384, and Medaille College rounded out the field of teams in sixth place with 389.

Jimmy Gillespie (Glen Mills, PA/Garnet Valley) led the way for the Lions on Sunday, shooting 80 to match his season-low score and tie for second place out of 33 individuals in the round.

Andrew Ferguson (Altoona, PA/Tyrone) carded an 84 to tie for ninth place individually, and Trey Heffelfinger (Mount Union, PA/Mount Union) and Jacob Mrvos (North Huntingdon, PA/Norwin) each shot 85 to tie for 11th place. Luke Hoffnagle (York, PA/Spring Grove) shot 86 to take 13th place.

Penn State Altoona men's golf resumes competition in day two of the AMCC Championships tomorrow, Monday, April 19. Tee times for the Lions will begin at 12:00 p.m.
