Lions Golf Finishes as AMCC Runners-Up

ERIE, Pa. –Penn State Altoona men's golf shaved 16 strokes off of Sunday's team score during the second and final round of the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Championships on Monday at Peek'n Peak Golf Resort, but it was not enough to overcome Penn State Behrend's lead, as the Lions finished in second place.

Penn State Altoona improved upon Sunday's score of 334 by shooting 318 as a team in Monday's round, finishing the AMCC Championships with a combined score of 652. However, Penn State Behrend held on to the top spot in the tournament standings by compiling a team score of 312 to follow up their first-round score of 320, finishing the event with 632.

"Our goal was to improve on yesterday's round, and that's what we did," said Penn State Altoona head coach Tom Koehle. "I'm really proud of the effort our players put in today."

Pitt-Bradford claimed third place with a two-day score of 695, Mount Aloysius College finished fourth with 723, Medaille College moved up to come in fifth with 767, and Pitt-Greensburg took sixth place with 780.

All five of Penn State Altoona's golfers finished within the top 10 individually, as each one matched or improved upon their scores from day one.

Jimmy Gillespie (Glen Mills, PA/Garnet Valley) duplicated his first-round score by firing an 80 in Monday's round, tying his season-low score in a round and finishing the tournament with a two-day score of 160 to come in fourth place out of 33 individuals. With his performance in the two rounds of the AMCC Championships, the senior was named to the All-Tournament team.

Luke Hoffnagle (York, PA/Spring Grove) shot a season-low 78 for the Lions, an eight-stroke improvement over his Sunday score. Trey Heffelfinger (Mount Union, PA/Mount Union) posted a six-stroke improvement from Sunday to Monday, carding a 79 in the second round. Hoffnagle and Heffelfinger each finished with combined scores of 164 to tie for sixth place individually.

Jacob Mrvos (North Huntingdon, PA/Norwin) bettered his score by four strokes in Monday's round, shooting 81 on the day. Andrew Ferguson (Altoona, PA/Tyrone) improved by two strokes from the first to the second round, finishing the day with an 82. Mrvos and Ferguson each compiled two-day scores of 166 to tie for ninth place individually.

"Jimmy made All-Tournament team and proved to be the senior leader we have come to expect," said Koehle. "Luke shot his best round of the spring, and Jake gave us a solid effort in the five spot."

Penn State Altoona men's golf will finish its 2021 season this weekend, when the team will compete in one more event to round out its schedule. The Lions will travel to nearby Summit Country Club in Cresson this Saturday, April 24 to take part in the Mount Aloysius College Invitational, which is slated to begin at 12:00 p.m.

"Our goal is to win the Mount event on Saturday," Koehle stated. "We want to send the seniors out in style and give the first-year guys another win heading into the fall."
