Lions Win Mount Aloysius Invitational in Spring Season Finale

CRESSON, Pa. – The Penn State Altoona men's golf team ended its 2021 spring schedule on a high note Saturday, when the Lions took first place in the Mount Aloysius College Invitational at Summit Country Club.

The result was Penn State Altoona's fifth win in an event this season, as the team recorded four first place finishes in tournaments and also won a dual match during its schedule.

The Lions shot their second-lowest score of the season on the par 72 course, finishing with 317 to lead the pack of five teams. Penn State Behrend was the runner-up with 325, and Pitt-Bradford placed third with 330. Rounding out the field was host Mount Aloysius in fourth with 335 and Pitt-Greensburg in fifth with 370.

"What a way to respond to our disappointment of last weekend by coming back today and taking our fifth tournament in six tries this spring," said Penn State Altoona head coach Tom Koehle. "It shows the leadership of our seniors and the potential of our first-year players."

Trey Heffelfinger (Mount Union, PA/Mount Union) took first place out of 31 individuals with a score of 77. The freshman defeated Penn State Behrend's Jake Caldwell in a playoff for the top spot with a birdie on the second playoff hole.

"Trey made a great birdie on the second hole to take the individual title today," said Koehle. "It was exciting to see him bookend the spring with individual victories."

Jimmy Gillespie (Glen Mills, PA/Garnet Valley) also carded a 77 for the Lions, his lowest score of the season. The senior was eliminated in the playoff for first place after a bogey on the first hole.

"Jimmy was determined to end his college career on a high note," Koehle stated. "He was focused and played his best round of the spring. His resilience and team-first attitude will be missed."

Andrew Ferguson (Altoona, PA/Tyrone) shot 81 to tie for eighth place individually, and Jacob Mrvos (North Huntingdon, PA/Norwin) fired an 82 to tie for tenth. Luke Hoffnagle (York, PA/Spring Grove) finished with 87 to tie for 19th place.

Ryan Marshall (Pittsburgh, PA/Peters Township) and Gaige Orndoff (Hollidaysburg, PA/Hollidaysburg) competed as individuals for Penn State Altoona. Marshall shot 89 to place 23rd individually, and Orndoff finished with a score of 95 to come in 26th.

"Our program is built on class individuals and an alumni base that supports us. Jimmy, Jake, and Luke, our three seniors, have been the heart of the program the past four years and are the epitome of what it means to be a student-athlete," said Koehle. "I'll miss them but know the influence they had on our underclassmen will help keep the competitive tradition of Penn State Altoona golf alive heading into the future."
