Lions Golf Ties for Eighth in The Gauntlet

HARRISBURG, Pa. – By the conclusion of the two-day event known as The Gauntlet, presented by Premier Collegiate Tournaments and hosted at Dauphin Highlands Golf Course, the Penn State Altoona men's golf team took a tie for eighth place out of 14 teams.

Penn State Altoona finished with a two-round score of 589, tying Drew University for eighth place. Franklin & Marshall College won the tournament by one shot, coming in at 574 and ahead of second-place Randolph-Macon College's 575. York College placed third with a combined score of 576.

Penn State Altoona shot two of its lowest team rounds in program history at the tournament, which spanned Sunday, September 10 and Monday, September 11. In round one – which began on Sunday, was suspended due to darkness, and then completed early Monday morning – the Lions shot 294 to tie their second-lowest score in team history. Round two teed off shortly after the conclusion of the first round, and Penn State Altoona shot 295, tying for the fourth-best team score in the history of the program.

Peter Nusbaum (Pittsboro, NC/Thales Academy) finished with Penn State Altoona's lowest two-round score of the tournament, including a collegiate career-low in round two. Nusbaum carded a 3-over par 75 in round one, then followed that up by shooting a 4-under 68 in round two to finish with a combined score of 143, tying for eighth place individually out of 75 total competitors. Nusbaum's 68 is a collegiate career-best for the sophomore, and it also ties for the second-lowest score by a Lions golfer in team history.

Trey Heffelfinger (Mount Union, PA/Mount Union) made his season debut for the Lions in the tournament, finishing with a two-round score of 148 to tie for 30th place individually. The senior shot 75 in round one, then shaved two strokes off of his score during the second round to card a 73.

Owen Wise (Lewistown, PA/Mifflin County) and Jack DiTrani (Hinsdale, IL/Benet Academy) tied for 52nd place with matching two-day scores of 151. Wise shot 1-over par, 73, in round one, then followed that up with a 78 in round two. DiTrani finished round one 1-under par with a 71, then shot 80 in round two.

Andrew Bruce (Moon Township, PA/Moon) rounded out the Lions' starting five, combining to shoot 155 to tie for 64th place individually. Bruce carded a 79 in round one, then improved by three shots in the second round, firing a 76.

Next up, Penn State Altoona men's golf will compete in the annual, two-day Mountain Valley Collegiate Classic, which sees the Lions and nearby Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference school Mount Aloysius College split hosting duties. Day one of the Classic, Saturday, September 16, will be hosted by Mount Aloysius at its home course, Summit Country Club in Cresson. Penn State Altoona will take over hosting responsibilities for day two, when play shifts to the Lions' home course, Sinking Valley Country Club in Altoona, on Sunday, September 17. Both rounds are scheduled to tee off at 11 a.m.
