Men’s Golf Tied for First After Day One at Mountain Valley Classic

CRESSON, Pa. – By the conclusion of day one of the Mountain Valley Collegiate Classic on Saturday, the Penn State Altoona men's golf team found itself in a tie for first place out of 15 teams.

Saturday's round was played at the par 72 Summit Country Club and hosted by Mount Aloysius College.

The Lions shot 304 as a team, tying Westminster College for the top spot in the first-round standings. Pitt-Greensburg held third place with 309, and Saint Vincent College was in fourth with 314.

Jack DiTrani (Hinsdale, IL/Benet Academy) and Peter Nusbaum (Pittsboro, NC/Thales Academy) each shot 2-over par to lead Penn State Altoona's starting five. DiTrani and Nusbaum's scores of 74 put them in a tie for fourth place out of 82 individuals.

Andrew Bruce (Moon Township, PA/Moon) finished the day 4-over par, shooting 76 to find himself in a tie for sixth place individually. Trey Heffelfinger (Mount Union, PA/Mount Union) carded an 80 to finish the round in a tie for 23rd place, and Michael Gloth (Glenwood, MD/Glenelg) made his season debut for the Lions with an 83, tying for 40th place.

Penn State Altoona also had a 'B' team compete, and the squad shot 323 to finish the round in ninth place.

Sean McCullough (Kittanning, PA/West Shamokin) led the Lions' 'B' team by firing a 77 and ending Saturday's round in a tie for 11th place individually. Maxwell Samangy (Crafton, PA/Carlynton) shot 78 and tied for 14th place on the day.

Jack Ankeny (Davidsville, PA/Conemaugh Township) and Daniel Batrus (Altoona, PA/Altoona) each carded an 84 to tie for 46th place, and Ethan Ellis (Pittsburgh, PA/North Catholic) ended the day in a tie for 63rd place with an 89.

In addition to its 'A' and 'B' teams, Penn State Altoona also had three of its golfers compete as individuals.

Stephen Phillips (Gambrills, MD/DeMatha Catholic) shot 80 and finished the round in a tie for 23rd place individually. Anthony Carson (Broomall, PA/Cardinal O'Hara) carded an 89 to tie for 63rd, and Trent Querry (Altoona, PA/Bishop Guilfoyle) ended the round in a tie for 69th place with 91.

The second and final round of the Mountain Valley Collegiate Classic is tomorrow, Sunday, September 17, when play will shift to Penn State Altoona's home course, Sinking Valley Country Club in Altoona. Tee times are currently scheduled to begin at approximately 10:30 a.m.
