Men’s Golf Wins Mountain Valley Classic

ALTOONA, Pa. – The Penn State Altoona men's golf team bagged its second tournament victory of the season on Sunday, when the Lions clinched a first-place finish in this weekend's Mountain Valley Collegiate Classic.

After being in a tie for first place following Saturday's first round of the tournament, which was played at Summit Country Club, Penn State Altoona shot 295 in Sunday's round on their home course, Sinking Valley Country Club, to wrap up first place out of 15 teams. The Lions combined for a two-day score of 599, and their Sunday round of 295 tied for the fourth-lowest score in a round in team history.

Westminster College took second place with a two-round score of 602, and Penn College placed third with 626.

Jack DiTrani (Hinsdale, IL/Benet Academy) was the individual runner-up out of 82 total golfers for the two-day tournament, combining for a two-round score of 145. The sophomore shot 1-under par in Sunday's round, firing a 71.

Peter Nusbaum (Pittsboro, NC/Thales Academy) took third place in the two-day standings, finishing with a combined score of 147, which included carding 1-over par, 73, on Sunday. Trey Heffelfinger (Mount Union, PA/Mount Union) had Penn State Altoona's low score in the round, shooting a 2-under par, 70, on Sunday to finish with a two-day score of 150 to place fifth individually.

Andrew Bruce (Moon Township, PA/Moon) tied for 18th by the end of Sunday's round with a two-day score of 158, including shooting 82 on Sunday. Michael Gloth (Glenwood, MD/Glenelg) tied for 35th place in the tournament, scoring 164 across two days, including an 81 on Sunday.

Penn State Altoona's 'B' team took fourth place in the team standings, shooting 308 on Sunday and finishing with a two-day score of 631.

Sean McCullough (Kittanning, PA/West Shamokin) led the Penn State Altoona 'B' team with a two-round score of 154, duplicating his first-round score by shooting 77 again on Sunday. Maxwell Samangy (Crafton, PA/Carlynton) took 22nd place individually, carding 81 on Sunday to finish with a two-day score of 159.

Daniel Batrus (Altoona, PA/Altoona) tied for 23rd place, carding 76 on Sunday and finishing with a two-round score of 160. Jack Ankeny (Davidsville, PA/Conemaugh Township) tied for 32nd with a two-round score of 162, and Ethan Ellis (Pittsburgh, PA/North Catholic) placed 44th with a two-day score of 166. Ankeny shot 78 on Sunday, while Ellis fired a 77.

Among Penn State Altoona's three individuals, Stephen Phillips (Gambrills, MD/DeMatha Catholic) was the Lions' top finisher. The freshman tied for 28th place individually with a combined score of 161 after shooting 81 on Sunday.

Anthony Carson (Broomall, PA/Cardinal O'Hara) tied for 55th place with a combined score of 172, including an 83 in Sunday's round. Trent Querry (Altoona, PA/Bishop Guilfoyle) tied for 64th place with a two-round score of 175, including an 84 on Sunday.

Penn State Altoona men's golf returns to action this Tuesday, September 19 for the third annual Hite Cup. The yearly competition sees the Lions go up against non-conference opponent Westminster for a day of match play at the prestigious Laurel Valley Golf Club in Ligonier. Tuesday's match is set to start at 1 p.m.
