Men’s Golf Sits in Seventh at Northeast Elite

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – By the end of Saturday's round of this weekend's Northeast Elite, hosted by Penn State Altoona and Penn College at the Williamsport Country Club, the Lions held seventh place out of 11 teams.

Penn State Altoona shot 319 as a team on the par 71 course to finish the first of the two-day tournament in seventh. Franklin & Marshall College led the pack with 296, Scranton University was in second with 301, and Swarthmore College was third with 302.

Among the Lions' starting five, Trey Heffelfinger (Mount Union, PA/Mount Union) led the way by shooting 4-over par, ending the round with 75 to finish the day tied for 10th place individually out of 58 golfers. Andrew Bruce (Moon Township, PA/Moon) carded a 78 to finish in a tie for 19th place.

Peter Nusbaum (Pittsboro, NC/Thales Academy) earned an 80 to tie for 30th place. Jack DiTrani (Hinsdale, IL/Benet Academy) and Sean McCullough (Kittanning, PA/West Shamokin) rounded out the lineup by shooting 86 and 91, respectively.

Penn State Altoona again fielded a 'B' team, which compiled a score of 326 to rank in eighth place on the team leaderboard.

Jack Ankeny (Davidsville, PA/Conemaugh Township), Daniel Batrus (Altoona, PA/Altoona), and Stephen Phillips (Gambrills, MD/DeMatha Catholic) all shot 80 for the 'B' squad to tie for 19th place. Meanwhile, Michael Gloth (Glenwood, MD/Glenelg) carded an 86, and Maxwell Samangy (Crafton, PA/Carlynton) shot 91.

Penn State Altoona also had three of its golfers compete as individuals.

Anthony Carson (Broomall, PA/Cardinal O'Hara) had the third-lowest score of the day of any Penn State Altoona golfer, firing a season-best 79 to end the round in a tie for 24th place individually. Trent Querry (Altoona, PA/Bishop Guilfoyle) carded an 84, and Ethan Ellis (Pittsburgh, PA/North Catholic) shot 88.

Penn State Altoona men's golf will wrap up the weekend in the second and final round of The Northeast Elite tomorrow, Sunday, October 1. The Lions' tee times are scheduled to begin at approximately 9:50 a.m.
