Golf Takes Sixth at Northeast Elite

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – By the end of Sunday's round of the Northeast Elite tournament, hosted by Penn State Altoona and Penn College at Williamsport Country Club, the Lions men's golf team took sixth place out of 11 teams.

Penn State Altoona posted a 16-shot improvement from the opening round on Saturday, as the Lions shot 303 on Sunday to finish with a two-day score of 622. Their team score of 303 tied for the lowest on the day of any team, matching Penn College's 303 on its home course.

Franklin & Marshall College won the two-day tournament with a combined score of 603. Swarthmore College was the runner-up with 612, and Penn College placed third with 614.

Andrew Bruce (Moon Township, PA/Moon) and Jack DiTrani (Hinsdale, IL/Benet Academy) each shot 3-over par in Sunday's round, carding 74 to tie for the Lions' lowest scores of the day. Bruce finished with a two-day score of 152 to tie for sixth place individually out of 58, while DiTrani tied for 31st with a combined score of 160.

Trey Heffelfinger (Mount Union, PA/Mount Union) tied for sixth place on the player leaderboard by the conclusion of Sunday's round, shooting 77 during day two to compile a score of 152. Peter Nusbaum (Pittsboro, NC/Thales Academy) carded a 78 on Sunday, finishing with a two-round score of 158 to tie for 20th place. Sean McCullough (Kittanning, PA/West Shamokin) improved by 10 strokes from his first-round score, firing an 81 on Sunday to take 46th place with a two-round score of 172.

Penn State Altoona's 'B' team finished in eighth place, shaving seven shots off of its round one score by posting 319 on Sunday. The 'B' squad ended the tournament with a two-day score of 645.

Michael Gloth (Glenwood, MD/Glenelg) had the low score for Penn State Altoona's 'B' team, firing 77 on Sunday to tie for 36th place on the player leaderboard with a two-round score of 163. Jack Ankeny (Davidsville, PA/Conemaugh Township) shot 78 on Sunday, compiling a two-day score of 158 to tie for 20th place individually.

Daniel Batrus (Altoona, PA/Altoona) carded 81 on Sunday and tied for 33rd place, after totaling 161 across two rounds. Maxwell Samangy (Crafton, PA/Carlynton) shot 83 in round two, tying for 48th place with a two-day score of 174. Stephen Phillips (Gambrills, MD/DeMatha Catholic) took 41st place, after shooting 86 on Sunday and finishing with a combined score of 166.

Meanwhile, Penn State Altoona's three individual competitors wrapped up their weekend in Sunday's round.

Anthony Carson (Broomall, PA/Cardinal O'Hara) carded an 84 on Sunday, totaling 163 in the tournament to tie for 36th place individually. Ethan Ellis (Pittsburgh, PA/North Catholic) shot 86 in round two, compiling a total score of 174 to tie for 48th. Trent Querry (Altoona, PA/Bishop Guilfoyle) shot 92 on Sunday and took a tie for 51st place with a two-day score of 176.

Now, Penn State Altoona men's golf will prepare for the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Championships. The two-day league championship event is set for Monday, October 9 and Tuesday, October 10 at Indiana Country Club in Indiana, Pa.

At the conference tournament, the Lions will be looking for their third consecutive AMCC title, as well as the team's eighth in program history. An AMCC championship would also secure the Lions' seventh-ever NCAA postseason berth.
