Golf in Eighth After Round One at Region V Showcase

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – The Penn State Altoona men's golf team resumed its regular season schedule on Monday, when the Lions competed in day one of the NCAA Region V Showcase at the Warren Golf Course at Notre Dame.

Penn State Altoona, which also has hosting duties for the two-day tournament, found itself in eighth place out of 16 teams by the conclusion of day one. The Lions shot 314 on the par 71 course to finish the round in the middle of the pack.

Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology held down the top spot on the team leaderboard with a score of 295. Otterbein University was in second place with 300, and Capital University was third with 306.

Peter Nusbaum (Pittsboro, NC/Thales Academy) led Penn State Altoona's starting five by shooting 3-over par, carding 74 to finish the round in a tie for third place out of 95 individuals. Andrew Bruce (Moon Township, PA/Moon) fired a 78 to tie for 23rd place by the end of the day.

Jack DiTrani (Hinsdale, IL/Benet Academy) and Trey Heffelfinger (Mount Union, PA/Mount Union) each shot 81 to come in a tie for 43rd place, and Jack Ankeny (Davidsville, PA/Conemaugh Township) rounded out the lineup with an 85 to tie for 66th.

Penn State Altoona also sent its 'B' squad to the tournament, and that unit finished the day in 15th place after shooting 340 collectively.

Sean McCullough (Kittanning, PA/West Shamokin) shot 80 for the 'B' team's low score, finishing the round in a tie for 31st place individually. Maxwell Samangy (Crafton, PA/Carlynton) carded an 82 to tie for 50th place by the end of the round.

Daniel Batrus (Altoona, PA/Altoona) and Anthony Carson (Broomall, PA/Cardinal O'Hara) each scored an 89, and Michael Gloth (Glenwood, MD/Glenelg) shot 93.

The Lions also sponsored a trio of individuals: Stephen Phillips (Gambrills, MD/DeMatha Catholic), Ethan Ellis (Pittsburgh, PA/North Catholic) and Trent Querry (Altoona, PA/Bishop Guilfoyle). Phillips carded an 85, Ellis shot 87, and Querry scored an 88.

Penn State Altoona returns to action tomorrow, Tuesday, October 24, for the second and final day of the Region V Showcase. Tee times are expected to start at approximately 10 a.m.
